I've been Googling this for awhile, but I'm just going to ask. Does anyone know if I can bring my Kindle to MEPS? I know you're allowed to bring a book. Most of my textbooks and leisure books are on the Kindle, so if I can get away with that, then hey, half a day to read my books. If not, I'll buy some paperback so I'm not staring at a wall.
 
Dont think so since they made everyone turn off their cell phone. I didnt feel like I had a whole lot of time to read a book while waiting.

Well, I guess you could always get into the argument I get into with stewardesses with my kindle. "Excuse me, sir. Can you turn off your device?" "It is off". "No it isn't, I can see your book". "Yeah, it doesn't have any active flow of electricity unless you turn pages. Turning it off simply puts another 'screen saver' image on the page. Nothing turns it "off"".

What is "off". Oh, philosophy....

Don't be an ass to the FAs. They are just doing their job, enforcing a FAR and protecting my license. You know damn well you can power it down to a blank screen or like with my Nook, one that says the word "off" on it. It's really obvious that you have to be contrary just to be contrary. We have a name for that - asshole. Be an asshole on my plane and you'll find yourself being a non-flying asshole.

You need to remember that disobeying the flight crew is a federal offense and probably will result in law enforcement escorting you off the plane. What are you going to say to your CO when he gets a report from a federal law enforcement agency? "But Sir! I swear! There was NO electricity FLOWING!" (I assume you talk in randomly capitalized words too.) I doubt your CO shares your "philosophy". You're a Naval Officer. Grwow up and act like one.

I wasn't being an ass and NO, I can't. When you turn it "off", it goes to a screen saver screen which I think actually shifts after some time interval (maybe not). That's why the battery lasts like 2 weeks+. It doesn't use power unless you hit a button. And I wasn't challenging the FA. In fact, I turned it to the "screen saver" (off) mode when she asked. I had to explain to her that it was off. Call it artistic license in telling a story.

If you couldn't read the purposeful humor in the intent of my post (as it pertained to MEPS, not a flight), then that's your problem. I've never actually "gotten into it" with a FA or any flight crew. As much as you build me up in your head to be whatever, you need to lighten up (all due respect) if you somehow think I wake up every day asking "How can I fuck with everyone today?".

Meh. Difference is I've read NATOPS. Never read anything about my kindle. Took it out of the box. Turned it on.

And do people really elaborate stories to be cool? Jesus christ. It was a simple post telling the kid to bring his kindle to MEPS. What is with everyone?
 
Funny, my sister-in-law has had every version of the Kindle made and she is always able to power them off to a blank screen. My Nook Simple Touch has a 100 hour battery life. When you turn it off, you get a screen that says "this device if off" and that screen blanks out a minute or so later. BTW, your story is changing. From seeing the book being okay to it being a screen saver. And the screen saver is a standby mode, not off.

But I understand, you have the super doper technologically enhanced perpetual Kindle where it would cause a melt down of the micro-reactor core leading to the pile burning a hole through the bottom of your Kindle, through the plane and to the center of the earth if you took all power away. So please don't do that no matter what the FA ask or the FARs require.
