Commissary - Love it or Leave it.

Try the ICE website for your base. I've seen that actually gets fairly high-level attention when complaints are made on it.

I'm single. My roommate and I use the commissary for about 90% of our grocery shopping. It typically saves us a decent amount of money compared to the HEB's in Corpus and when we were in P'Cola, it certainly saved us quite a bit from the Publix's there. What we can't find at the Commissary (typically some odd spice or a specialized sauce or something) we'll go to the civilian markets. Just my .02. The biggest items we save money on are, in fact the staples - milk in both places was probably 30% cheaper than the civilian stores as was eggs, beef and chicken.

Don't get me started on the NEX. I think the only things I buy there are uniform items and a new pair of sneakers 2x a year. Otherwise, I typically hate the place and don't see it as a place that saves me any money.

It would make a lot more sense CONUS to just increase BAS (or add a new grocery allowance, similar to the uniform allowance) and consider that the cost of being able to do away with a cumbersome, money-losing entity that offers sub-par service and a sub-par product. That 1.3 billion annually would cover a decent grocery allowance for every junior enlisted person.

Agreed. Financially, for the government, this is a much better option.

The NEX has some extremely good deals on a few things. I use the Bar Code Scanner app on my phone to check prices before I buy. Got some great deals that way, but not everything in there is cheaper...actually most isn't.

For Corpus, the heeb was an oasis.....I miss that place, though socal stores are both better, and even more expensive :)

Speaking of the NEX, has anyone's NEX not sold out of black T-shirts recently with the uniform change?

There's always Walmart

Brett

Or J.C. Penny's. They usually have them on sale every couple of weeks for $5-10 a piece. They're not paper thin (I'm looking at you, Hanes) and the collars hold up. I have a few that are starting to get a little tired, but I think they were abused by ship laundry.

I know folks, I know. Just commenting on an obvious "uniform shop"/well-run business FAIL.

Yes, an entrepreneurial store manager would've stocked up on black shirts the second the NAVADMIN came out. Maybe they should have some kind of profit-sharing there and there'd be more responsiveness to what people want.

I buy my booze from the NEX just for that. Hell half the time I walk in for one thing and walk out with another because 15 bucks for a handle of Bombay Saphire is too cheap not to buy it.

That is a good deal! Though I rarely see the booze there any cheaper at the NEX than Costco (two 1.5l bottles of Hornitos for $20, now that's a damn good deal!). As for the commissary, I buy a lot of cereals there and a few other odds and ends but Costco is usually cheaper on most things (due to bulk). I haven't bought meat at the store, other than chicken, in over a year, but I remember the commissary being considerably cheaper than most stores.

As for other items at the NEX - some stuff rocks, like shaving cream. Most of the clothes seemed to be targeted towards the more...urban/hiphop crowd, at least here in AK. Their gun prices are occasionally pretty good but their ammo prices are never anything to write home about. The gun counter is, however, very well stocked (want to buy a Barret .50 cal? they have one for a mere $4500...and people buy 'em!).
