JOs vs Aquaflage (standing duty in NWU)

We had a change of command recently. Pretty much the only thing the Navy student body wanted out of it was to wear bags on duty instead of khakis. At the first AOM the new skipper authorized aquaflage on duty. The Navy dudes all just cut their eyes at each other, and the Marines all snickered (we wear cammies on duty).

There still hasn't been an SDO with blue cammies.

You guys wear khakis on watch in Merids now? Who f'd it up to make that happen?

Buffalo wanted it so we got it, and still have it. 7 still wears bags on duty. Doesn't matter to me. Cammies are as comfy as bags to me after they've been worn in over a few seasons (and now that I don't have to Sta-flo them anymore and get to wear a riggers belt).
 
More and more of the blueberries showing up at CENTCOM FWD HQ in the Died. Looks prepostorous in 120 degrees, black boots to boot. While we do our best to maintain relevance in the current 'fight', we curtsie and wear the Army's uniform since we have nothing that doesn't make us look like complete jackasses (desert cammies are going away Ive heard).

On another note, we are the only service that wears polyester in the Pentagon. All others (save Monday) wear their cammies and flight suits... wow are we cool.

The blueberries gotta go, they make us look queer. String up the shameful designers by their underpants.
 
At 106 we're rockin the smurf cammies on duty. More comfortable than khakis for sure, but I'd love to wear a bag.
 
Meh, the only time we have to wear khakis for anything related to watch is when we lead quarters, and normally we find a guy who's just checked in to do that. It's bags the rest of the time.
 
I'd take the NWUs any day of the week, we rock SDBs/whites here. I'd take them over khakis too as they're waaaaaaaaaaaay more comfortable, albeit retarded looking.

I can only dream of the bag on watch.

And here is the problem. You would really rather wear that POS NWU get-up than our traditional NAVY working uniform? Here's another problem - not everyone who wears that uniform (NWU) takes much pride in putting it on. They translate "comfortable" with haphazard wear. How many people do you see walking around with poorly fit, poorly maintained NWUs? And no offense here, but women are some of the worst offenders with blouses and pants that are TOO big and covers pulled down like shitty baseball caps.... Rejoin the Navy and put on a set of khakis...

I thought that according to the uniform regs, you could always go up in uniforms. Ie Khakis, SDB, or whites should all be acceptable if the instruction says NWU. I knew JOs that would wear SDBs on watch because they hated the other option so much.

Of course it's also stupid that a flight suit won't suffice, especially on the boat. But alas...

This sounds dangerously similar to doing something a certain way for the simple reason that "that's the way it's always been done."

Tradition or not, at some point, practicality has to come into play. Am I a fan of the Smurfflage? Hell no - I think it looks ridiculous. However, it is much more practical as a working uniform than Khakis. Take the boat, for example: There is nothing more unprofessional looking than some dude on the quarterdeck in khakis or whites that have massive sweat stains on and through them because it's 120° out, or whose pants have rust and grease on them because they've touched part of the ship. In fact, even the NWU has a "don't screw with me" look to it when worn on duty.

I, for one, am damn glad that the Marines went away from wearing Chucks on duty. Nowadays, we typically wear cammies, which are much more comfortable and practical. (I still LOATHE the duty belt and cover requirement at some places, though. I warmed up to the brassard on the left upper arm - it was a good way of recognizing that someone was on duty, and even ID'd the unit he was responsible for. The duty belt and cover worn 24/7 needs to go. Maybe when the supply of cartridge belts is depleted...)

Now, in a perfect world, pilots would wear bags at all times, regardless of the opinions of any other communities. I can dream, can't I?

This is not just an NWU problem. I see it with all uniforms, primarily among junior enlisted females. I'm not sure if the tailors are doing a crappy job, or the sailors themselves just don't know better. Probably both. Bad on us as Os, chiefs, and LPOs for not quashing it, though. It makes them look like a kid playing around and wearing Mommy's uniform. Completely unmilitary looking.

Or maybe when I see it, the kids are straight out of boot camp and tend to get the situation fixed as they show up to a squadron; I don't know.

So what the hell do they do at boot camp in the Navy these days? Lots of people talk about how incredibly anal a lot of Marines are about the small things, and I agree with that crowd on a lot of points, but if you want to have a strong, professional military you have to be brilliant at the basics. If a man/woman can't wear an 8 point cover properly, they either haven't been told how, or don't have the pride to do so. Both are leadership failures. And don't try to tell me that they look like that because they spend all their time training on their weapons system or because they spend 12 hours a day in the admin shop. We're talking about war fighters, not disheveled physics professors.
