Who is the pilot in control on a shuttle mission?, the commander or the pilot on the right?
and the people who fly the shuttle are either Navy/ AF pilot, do they make big $$$$$$ besides their miltary pay???

Yeah, what's the going per diem rate for low Earth orbit? :D ;)

The first is an interesting theoretical question. Seeing as a mission can go a week or more, does that mean they each log 24*7=168 hours of flight time? Is that all considered multi-engine time, or just the few minutes getting into orbit? Since it's technically a vertical takeoff, shouldn't they get the same "powered lift" shaft I get? Is the re-entry logged as glider time?

To the second question. No. They get their military pay and allowances. However, on an interview with an astronaut on NPR, one said they do file a no-shit travel claim for per diem while in orbit, noting "government transportation and meals provided." Thanks, DTS!

Just did some DTS training today. This fact made me throw up in my mouth a little.

If I'm not mistaken, CVW-14 contains both VFA-154, the "black knights" and HS-4, the "black knights". To me it seems a little dumb to have two squadrons, albeit one flys helos and the other jets, with the same 'nickname'. Is there a story behind this or is it just an unfortunate coincidence? (Sorry to those who just deployed with CVW-14 and may not have the easiest time responding to this.)

Are there any other instances of similar nicknames within air wings and any 'battles' over those names that ensued?

That is the most serious-sounding answer to a facetious question I've heard in a long time.

Log it upside-down, maybe? So everybody knows you did it in free-fall?
I'm sure somewhere in astronaut history there was a dude who took his logbook up and dutifully scribbled '24.0' of space time every day on-orbit.

BT-53. My office was in the Library in Bldg 45. I was doing Records Management and Doc Control mostly for ISS but I supported any program that needed my work.

Are you a Turtle?

When I first got down there I was a damn Yankee, but they mellowed on that over time...

I forget what my building number was, it was near the back where the Gilruth Center was.

Same thing happened to me. I had to remind poeple every once in a while who won the war, but after a couple of weeks made some friends and was part of a regular golf foursome. I don't know why Houston gets a bad rap (maybe besause I've been in Boston and DC for the past 15 years) I had a great time down there.

I enjoyed living down there, the friendliest people I've met are those from the South. Winters were a hell of a lot better than here in Wisconsin, too....

I've wondered that myself- ever notice the Shuttle Mission Commander qual is an option in SHARP? I wonder if one of the pilots empties the trash and dumps out the coffee while the other runs inside to get the paperwork started.
