Indeed. But I'm guessing it looks strange, not because of the the knot, but because his collar is too small.

True.
If it were a chump knot or a fake it would be more perfect. It has to be tied freehand to be so swollen at the top and skinny at the bottom.

Well at least I feel not stupid for asking what the hell is up with his shirt/tie combo...

I suspect he undid his top button for comfort causing that effect.

So how does that work, exactly? Do they go up to a board and actually "choose" orders to where they're going?

Yup, they'll go in order based on the rank in the class - there's boards with all the duty stations, and ships available. Then they pick their ship/duty station and obviously it's not longer available for the guys behind them.

After factoring in port, class, etc., how do MIDs know which ships are "good" ships. I assume there must be some kind of gouge on the command climate?

What if the boards had billets/jobs on the back? That could add a fun twist... AUX-O, 1st LT, electrical O... :) Correspondingly, aviation selection could have platform or aircraft as a surprise on the back (never mind Primary grades).

Ideas like this are why I'm not in charge :D

Back to being serious, I see LHA-5, LHA-6, and LPD-22 on there... and a few old FFGs. Time marches on!

The ships don't even know what billet they'll get. At one point we had so many Ensigns there were 3 LDO "assistants" in addition to 2 other unnecessary jobs.

This would be great to pull on those morons (like the one a few weeks ago who was asking about switching communities in case he got "stuck" going something else other than jets) who have never flown in their life yet somehow know that jets are the only thing for them.
