USNA Color Guard, Overly PC?

I didn't go to USNA so I can't comment on the diversity culture there, but my thought as soon as I read the beginning of the article (which CDR Salamander also expressed) was how there are 4, not 2 victims, to this issue if it indeed go down as he told. Especially as a minority in the military I would feel so ashamed if I knew I was picked for something because I was female instead of a male who originally qualified for it. Even if I was just as qualified in the end, I don't know how I could ever stop doubting my own skills. Do we want to send officers to the fleet who may truly be good enough, but still have it in the back of their heads that they might only be there because they are minorities?

Yeah... this is exactly why things like Affirmative Action, despite guilty white liberals' best efforts to be PC and "fair", only highlight our differences and create this notion that ANYONE who is different only got to where they are because of their race, and not their merit.

This is a slap in the face of ANYONE (even those of differing races) who are worthy, as many will think they didn't really deserve it.

This kind of shit needs to stop. (and if there's more to THIS particular story, then there are plenty of previous ones which my post applies to).

Something like this does not surprise me at all. Many of you who where there in 04-05 will remember the company commander rearrangement for the exact same reasons. I'm sure there's more to the situation than the article indicates, but I have a feeling it isn't much. I used to be on the drill team and we worked closely with the color guard guys for certain events. They were top notch guys who knew what they were doing.

The problem with it is that it really was a good idea in theory. The underprivileged don't have the resources or the means that their more affluent counterparts do (notice I'm not specifying race). So we provide the underprivileged with a means to demonstrate their talents and abilities, by assisting them to get into good universities that might not otherwise accept them due to finances or other reasons.

Good idea, right? Sounds good to me.

Then it became a federal pet project and campaign promise, it was exploded and sensationalized by the media, polarized into a black-and-white (literally and figuratively) issue by both the left and the right, and here we are today. Too much diversity is never quite enough, and if there is a photograph with anything less than one man, one woman, one transgendered, one black, one white, one yellow, one albino, one illegal immigrant, one atheist, one same-sex couple, and so on, it's not diverse enough, and one more highly-qualified person has to step aside to make room for the less-qualified but more diverse individual.

Shame how many good ideas are perverted into bad ones.

I won't comment on opinion given the situation I'm in, but there is a CMEO case on this now as far as I understand it.

This is the part that really pisses me off. I don't care what color/gender/religion a person is--the most qualified person should not be taken out of their hard-earned position. If they all happen to be one gender and one race, then so be it. If they are the most competent and have worked their butts off to be there, then there is absolutely no justification for a replacement.

A quick threadjack...but somewhat related.

I've been a "Close Order Drill" fan for almost fifty-five years...since leading the local (very large) Boy Scout troop in several parades...that said, check this out: (Recently rx'd from an old squadron mate, Capt. USN, Retired)

US Navy Presidential Drill Team

This occurred three years ago. Our Navy Ceremonial Guard Silent Drill Team was invited to compete in an International Tattoo in Norway. They competed against military units from all over NATO and won first place.
An incredible group of Sailors that should make us all proud!!

Yeah. They realized they screwed up somehow (either in their action or the way their action was interpreted) and are now trying to backtrack...

I ain't buying it.

So you believe they are lying? Why do you give more credance to anonymous tips and sources than the USNA PAO staff?

Ballsiest swo ever! I wasn't aware we had a Silent Drill team at the Ceremonial Guard. One of my advanced/RAG classmates was a ceremonial guard guy before his STA-21 days; he said the primary thing they recruited guys for out of boot (besides not being a dirtbag) was height. I think 6'2 was the minimum for males? He's got some cool stories and pictures.

Back to topic, complete and utter bullshit. Not surprising, though. The same stuff is happening everywhere. It went on at Tech, too. When females/minorities made up less than 10% of the Cadet Corps, but were 70% of the command slate, it doesn't take a mathematician to figure out that it didn't add up.

I'm trying to imagine what was going through Lt. Green's head during that marvelous display: "Okay fellas, 3 months of practice and 53 changes of command later, we've got this in the bag now." :D
