BOEING 747-8: A Boost & a Gamble

SCREW the 'Dreamliner' (which has been a nightmare of a 'dream') ... BACK TO BASICS !!!

747's ... WHALES ... oh, Mommy !!! :D

I've got an idea, sez the corporate mogul: "LET'S BUILD THE ENTIRE FUCKIN' AIRPLANE IN WASHINGTON @ THE BOEING COMPANY ... you know, instead of scattered halfway around the freakin' WORLD hooked up w/ manufacturers who aren't ready for airline prime-time yet ... of mebbe EVER " !!!!!

WHAT A CONCEPT !!! Build the wings in Auburn from parts fabricated in Everett. Entire fuselage assembly in Everett -- just like the ol' days ... i.e., the 'glory days' ... we don't need no steenkin' 'international development & production team'.

You know ... let's do it again ... let's go with the things that worked when Boeing 'worked' ... ??? :)

I wish they had come out with this when Airbus was hawking the A380 as the next best thing to sliced bread. It might have put the nail in the coffin for the garbage planes they make.

From what little I know Boeing looked at what they termed the 'New Large Aircraft' in the mid-to-late 90's to replace the 747 and compete against the A380 but they decided to concentrate on producing/updating the 747. With their research and development money hitched to the 777 and then the 787 Boeing could only do so much and probably could not have afforded to try and develop two major new aircraft at the same time. Even Airbus, with it's government loans, can't quite do that nowadays.

It's a bit of a moot point too, the A380 ain't doing so hot and the 747-8 has primarily sold as the cargo version so far with only Lufthansa buying the passenger version and Boeing might be 'reassesing' the program. As the current fleet of 747-400's ages sales might pick up but that may be a while.

When I was a bit younger, my grandfather showed me a picture of my uncle (777 Captain) and his crew standing inside of the cowling of a GE90, along with the caption that read something about "100,000 lbs of thrust." I didn't know at the time turbofans made more than 50,000 lbs and pretty much decided they must be talking about the combined thrust... pretty mindblowing for a 10 year old
 
The biggest hindrance to a successful, on time, 'new-ish' WHALE roll out & sales program has been and continues to be the 787 bad-Dreamliner ...

Boeing and the idiots that they let get too much 'power' -- those same idiots that came from senior MD management in the 'merger' where they had ruined a once fine company -- made every design & production mistake on the Dreamliner that Airbus made on the -380 and others ... some things just never change, do they??? Without the cannibalization of the 747-8 design & production team, it would already have flown ...

The existing WHALES are getting old, and Boeing is betting that most carriers that employ the 747 would rather go w/ an updated, much more capable version of the venerable international passenger/freight hauler ... and I agree w/ them. There's just nothing like those 4 big fans to get the tonnage off the deck at Point A, get it to a higher altitude, fly faster than anyone else, and safely deliver the people and 'goods' to Point B. Airbus has always had the government $ubsidization advantage since their inception, and that has certainly hurt Boeing over the past couple of decades. Boeing traditionally has put their own treasure at risk and then recouped the investment with aircraft sales, relying on the market demands and a superior product.

As with anything ... time will tell. If anyone has the 'answer' or a glass ball that can foretell the answers ... now ... then I think Boeing is holding a senior management position open for you. One thing I DO know -- Boeing HAS to get their shit together and solve the design/production debacle that the 2-year late, multi-cultural 787 has become ... (mebbe they just need to 'do it' like they used to -- in-house -- as when they 'owned' the commercial skies .. ??) :)
 
Alright guys, right here, right now we can choose to do something about this. I think we should begin a campaign to get the aviation world on board with upgrading to the new 747-8.

But we need a slogan... something catch that nobody has heard. I know, "SAVE THE WHALES!"

I really like the lines of that plane too, but I don't like being a pax aboard them, at least on United or NW, too antiquated in terms of entertainment systems. JAL does a better job. But it's fast and just plain cool looking. I don't mind riding one if i'm up in the hump too, that's fun.
