Air Force offering recall to retired officers

Seems to me like the Navy has similar problems in various communities; more than enough JOs and not enough at the O-5 level. I know in Supply they have about a 95% selection rate for O-4 right now with the other 5% being mustang O-3s who put in for retirement. Seems to me we could fix these problems by adding some flexibility in the rigid officer promotion timeline.

Agreed...our promotion system is antiquated and needs a good overhaul. I hate the fact that I can't go do job X during year Y because it "doesn't work out for your timing." It also sucks that some asshole decided a few years back that "hey, I'll just knock out JPME before I make O-4 so that I really shine for that board". Now if you don't have it done going into your dept head tour, you are a fucking leper. A decade ago, nobody cared! Arrrrgh!
The Coast Guard has been offering contracts to some of their retired O's for quite a while. It is a great way to fill undermanned billets with bodies that don't have a care in the world about the long term future of their careers. As an added bonus, they continue to accrue years towards added retirement benefits and the government gets a body at reduced cost (they no longer pay out retirement while the member is serving on AD, just the normal AD pay). Sounds like a win/win.

what, may i ask, is JPME? is that your masters?

Joint Professional Military Education. I haven't done it yet. It is now a pre-req for the command screen board, I believe. I can't pontificate too much on it's benefits and drawbacks, but I can tell you that it is extremely painful to get done. I think there have been a few other threads on it, but am too lazy to search (hence why I am too lazy to get it done).

The USAF has the same retardation that essentially requires that you have your PME done in correspondence in order to be considered to go do it in residence.

Yeah. That makes a lot of sense.
