Alright, I can't take it anymore... What is going on w/ your avatar, shankopatomas? I know what it looks like, but what is it actually supposed to be?

I did a backwords image search with tineye and found out it is Cristie Kerr. And then found this article which also had the picture right next to it ... so safe assumption that this is for the US Women's Open Championship? (eh ... I doubt that ... but I've already invested too much time into this picture ... at least she's cute, hah)

Looks like some kind of golf tourney trophy?

I would disagree. Though I do agree that's what it probably was.

Gotcha.

Ok, looks like I've got some 'splainin to do.

I DO in fact have a documented and diagnosed LD by an educational physcologist. It is called dyscalculia. As for it being "debilitating", that's up for debate. While my case is quite severe in the spectrum, (the average of my math related abilities is at about the 5th grade level... eek), I'm still lucky enough to come equipped with decent logic skills, decent visualization capabilities and I don't have a problem with "mixing" numbers around, (or at least it's very week and I rarely ever notice it.) I have a waiver from my school so that I do not take the gen ed math requirement. Instead, I take a logic class to fulfill my graduation requirement.

I may have been misleading, but I have NO desire to have excuses or accommodations made for me by the military, or anybody else for that matter. The only people who know of my ld are my family and my ld coordinator at school and my golf coach. I do not every want to use my ld as an excuse to get special treatment from anyone . I want to be held to the same standards as everyone else. Yes, that means that becoming a commissioned officer in the navy is going to harder for me than most anybody out there, but I'm no stranger to a**-bustin-hard-work.

As for becoming a pilot, I wasn't clear about that, either. I know my limits, and know that becoming a pilot is impossible for me. I have no desire to let my issues put anyone or anything at risk.

I guess my main question is if I do happen to do well on the ASTB, and make it to MEPS, would they disqualify me because I have dyscalculia? Will they need to see documentation?

Bottom line: taking the ASTB and going through the process isn't wasting the recruiter's time. Actually, it's just asking him to do his job. If you get hung up at some point along the way (poor test scores, mediocre grades, medical screening) then you shake hands with the recruiter and go along your way.

By the way, with some of the recent nuggets to show up at my squadron, I'd say we now have no fewer than 8 diagnosable learning disabilities now represented in the wardroom...

Thanks. That was a big concern for me. I just didn't want to waste his time.

Just be aware of what is required of you if you go with BDCP and how you'll be placed as a designated striker should you not get adequate grades or not make it through OCS. If your LD is severe enough it could potentially harm you in one of those areas.

Wow, that definitely makes me think that I may need to just hold off until after I graduate to apply for OCS.

The barrage of questions you have to answer during medical screening/physical ask you about past surgeries, injuries of certain types and seeing anyone in mental health profession so that will require an honest answer and records as to what your final diagnosis was and if you don't have, your seek a final opinion of attending physician as to your suitability for military service. If you are competing at NCAA level and making decent grades, you have learned to cope at some level. Docs will decide if that level correlates to being able to cope in a stressful military setting. My advice is let the process work and be honest. They haver been screening people for decades so you're likely not the first with this "disability".

As to references, it's not like you have to know an Admiral or Senator. Your NCAA coach would be a sure bet and count a lot in my book. You you competed in HS as I suspect you did, then go back for a visit and include that coach as well. Think about your academic advisors in HS or College as well as they would could count as someone who likely knew about your disability and your ability to overcome it.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if I should ask my coach since he left at the end of last season, but I think he is a good bet because he is one of the few that know about my ld.

Sorry about that. This is indeed Cristie Kerr. This is not the US Open trophy, though. It's the LPGA Longs Drugs Challenge trophy, although I'm sure she's wishes it was the US Open hardware. ;)

I can change it if anyone finds it offensive.

Yeah, well. The Dude abides.
I am pretty sure gatordev wasn't talking about that *item* looking like the US Open Trophy, but something else ;)

Yeah but someone else mentioned that they did a reverse search and thought it may have been the US Open trophy. I just quoted this post because it was the first that questioned it. :icon_mi_1

So if you weren't thinking pilot, what were you thinking of applying for? There are some cool SWOs on here and Supply guys as well who might be good to talk to.

Anyway, this is a link to the waiver guide we look at when we're nervous about our medical issues. I think it's an aviation guide, but in the section in psychiatry about learning disorders it says that they aren't immediately disqualifying and are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Good luck!

I think the point of my post completely flew over some people's heads but nzachman caught it. I'm not offended by any means, just amused.

Picaroon, thanks for the links. That really cleared things up. I was wanting to go SWO, but I was under the impression that that required college calc and physics... Is that correct?

Sorry, gatordev for being confusing. I understood what you meant, but I figured I'd go ahead and ask if my icon was too phallic in nature for this forum while we were on the topic. ;)

If you were aware of its phallic nature, that just makes it all the more amusing.

I thought it was pretty obvious... if he wasn't aware, he's a total goober :) I think it's a great avatar...

Google says you do need the calc and physics for SWO. I briefly checked a link to about.com. I recommend researching more and seeing what each designator requires of you.

Pro-rec'd INTEL!!!!!
I bombed calc and never took physics (other than in high school) and still got pro-rec'd SWO for straight OCS. I don't know about BDCP though.
