How about we just all leave it at that one instruction says it is requried, one says it isn't. Obviously this is going no where and is a waste of everyones time in going back and forth. We can all believe what we want to on the subject. Whichever interpretation will in the long run only effect the individuals, little else. Nothing in gained by the bickering, defesiveness, or name calling, and we should all hope this dicussion would go differently in person than it has through the wonderful mechanism of the internet.

Look what I've done, the beast I've unleashed.

Thanks for the feedback though guys, at the end of the day it's probably best I take the whole thing, so no need to get cheap and try to go for the minimum. If I didn't have to take it, fine no big deal. Thanks for the help though, I appreciate it.

Just ignore chucky y'all. He's obviously a troll looking to start fights. By continuing the debate (which really is not one, since we all know Intel requires the whole test) we are giving him more power.

Actually I proved it doesn't require it all brenbitch. But then again, only a closet case would disagree with what I said.

watching you two wankers argue is like watching midgets wrestle or bitches box: odd, entertaining, yet unfulfilling.

I concur. But I gave up before I seen this post! ;)

i am trying for the NAVY.

i guess this isnt good.

"Whole person" remember that. Make sure the rest of your application is stellar to make up for any deficiencies. If you don't get accepted on the first go around then make sure you are studying so you can retake the ASTB and be able to reapply the following month. Good Luck.

just took ASTB for the first time this morning. Got a 5/6/5 49 hoping to get a PLC NFO slot for USMC. Took form 5 and felt pretty good about the reading, most of the mechanical comprehension, and the aviation/nautical information but the aviation subtest was very difficult. Some aviation subtest questions included detailed questions asking about air humidity, P-factor, wake and when wake occurs, navigation, and load capacity's. As well as the 1950s bomber question.

Studied for a week and basically memorized atrick's study guide. Also used the Barrons study book and FAA guide, which helps a lot.

I'm gonna be taking form 5 as well, thanks for the heads up. Do you remember any points I should focus on for mechanical? That was always my weakest area.

(Is this technically cheating? As long as he doesn't give me the questions I don't think it is....)

Has anyone here retaken the ASTB after they sent your application to the boards? The ny recruiting blog suggested that if you retake while your package is at the boards and your score drops, your initial score is still the one that will be looked at. I haven't heard anyone really talk about this strategy so thought I'd bring it up. I'm going to talk to my OR tomorrow and see what he has to say as well. I figure studying and retaking the ASTB would be a great way to fill the time while waiting for the April board results.

Really you have never heard this on here or seen it anywhere in this or the ASTB stats thread? HMMM... Alright... Basically you have 30 days you must wait before you can retake the ASTB after the first try and 6 months you must wait after the second try. Yes, it is feasible that you can send you package off, study, and retake the ASTB so you have a short turn around. This has been discussed numerous times as I alluded to above. But you may have heard it more in the form of, “ why not submit your application first then retake the ASTB if you get rejected.” Does something to that nature ring a bell? It is the same concept as the OR on the blog said. Obviously it is within reason. If you barely pass the minimum requirements then retaking is probably in your favor. People have been accepted with scores of 39 and 4's. I have seen people get very good ASTB scores of 60+ and 9's get rejected. Remember WHOLE PERSON! Good Luck!

I'm a junior midshipman in NROTC and I had a question regarding the ASTB for pilot selection. I found info on the NROTC board which is from 2005 it looks like, and it is very different from the Order of Merit info that my XO, who is an aviator, gave me.

He gave me:
Surface Order of Merit - 60%
(GPA - 45%)
(Aptitude - 35%)
(Major - 10%)
(PNS Points - 10%)
AQT - 15%
Pilot FAR - 25%

The percentages in parentheses are what make up the Surface OOM, and the Surface OOM makes up 60% of the Pilot OOM. Anyways, does this info sound right?

Also, I'm kind of worried about taking the ASTB again, I got an 8/7/7 the first time, but I took it late and I'm fast running out of time to take it again. I didn't really study the first time, since the XO said I should just try it once to get a feel for it and then take it again. I know it's an alright score, and I'd like to study and take it again, but if I screw up somehow, I won't really have time to take it again before the summer. Any advice on that?
