Required Man Skills

Very true, except of course Gin is the nectar of the God's :tongue2_1

Very true, a nicely made gin and tonic is the greatest thing out there. In addition to those listed, a man should be able to fix things.

Yeah, but nothing looks queerer than swimming laps (like Navy men should) and pulling your head up,turning yourself around using the side of the pool like a grade schooler.

Plus, doing flip turns makes you look like you know what you're doing which is ultimately manly, especially when related to sports.

You know sitting aroung the dusty plywood B-hut of an alert shack in a shitty FOB somewhere, we decided man-skills should be divided up into catagories such as basic, intermediate and advanced..

Oil change should be in the basic category.

What skills were classified as "advanced?"

Adjusting valves on a Ducati is an advanced man-skill. (desmodromic is a BIATCH)

Also properly setting up the carbs on a 2-stroke triple, and getting Lucas electrics on British machinery to function is up there as well.

Oil change should be in the basic category. Agreed, it's in line with changing a tire.

I don't know, we never made it that far. Maybe we were subconsciously afraid we couldn't measure up. Maybe something in line with being able to play an instrument (Recorder and air guitar didn't qualify), or possibly building a piece of furniture that didn't look like it was in the movie Beetlejuice, that you could actually display. Cooking a nice meal for your chick might qualify as well. Something other than macaroni & cheese along with a good Hamms and corn chips consumed on a surf board held up by two up-ended cinder blocks. Not saying that actually happened in my house...

Well, following the car work line of thought, I'd say in the advanced category would be:

Adjusting/changing a carb
Swapping spark plugs(and doing the associated tune-up with that)
Timing an engine

I could go on, but some other stuff may be an "expert" category.

Cleaning/changing points on a '69 Triumph Trident on the side of the road in the rain, hammered.

I was an "Advanced Man" at age 12, I guess. Always thought everyone could do it...

Not quite. I'm a city boy (not sure if that has anything to do with it), and I can barely point to the engine on my honda. Even if I knew anything about cars, you'd need a PhD in computer engineering, computer, voodoo magic and a glock to gain access to the engine of a honda.

Rebuilding a generator on a 72 GT380J on the side of Roosevelt with a nail and a spring found on the side of the road and a part of my pen to make it to work is in a similar vein.

My bike (Suzuki SV-650S) is also an 03. First model year to go fuel injection.

Yeah, my '00 Victory V92SC is fuel injected. As much as I like working on carbs, it is nice being able to let the computer do the thinking.
