Ok, I know am going to get torn a new one, but I wanted to ask anyway. Is it possible for a Navy NFO to go to Ranger School? I know I know... why in the world would an NFO go to Ranger School. I almost joined the Army, before seeing the light, and becoming a Ranger was my goal. As for now, I want to try to get a billet as a FAC at some point, if I make it that far, and I thought maybe I could be sent to Ranger School on the way.

Theoretically? Yes. Is it ever going to happen? No.

If you were a Marine, you'd have a much better chance of being sent on a FAC tour, but your chances of going to Ranger school would still be about nil. As a navy officer, your chances of being a no-shit FAC are just about next to nil as well. There are very, very few navy officers that are serving in some type of ground JTAC billet, but many are FAC(A)s. That's about as close as you're going to get.

If you want to be a Ranger (and there's nothing wrong with that), you'll need to join the army.

This is like an army officer asking if he could ever conn a ship. Possible, but extremely unlikely.

My balloon has been popped! Thanks for the timely response HarrierDude. N go on joining the Army, they lied to me too many times to make me want to try and join again. Besides I am sure the ladies love the gold wings more.

Granted that my information is about 20 years old, but here goes;

It was not uncommon to see a few AF types at Ranger school, mainly those that were going into their spec ops pipeline. There were fewer Marines, and I only ever remember seeing one person that was a Naval Aviator that got his tab. He was a former NFO, and according to him had been DQed after having an inner ear problem that ended his Navy days.

He then went Army, and became an infantry officer, where going to Ranger school is pretty much mandatory.

I would say that if you become a Naval Avaitor that the last thing that you would want to do is go to Ranger school unless it was necessary. I don't really see where it would be helpful to you other than the satisfaction of completing the program. To me, the skills that you would gain in small unit patrol would not outway the chance that you would get hurt in such a way that your day job would be in jeopardy.

All that being said, if you get to go, arrive ready to go, and watch out for snakes.

It was fun seein' the reaction from the Ranger-types who stroke themselves off over the tab they got after 10 weeks after one of 'em asked about what it takes to get wings.

Going to Ranger school as an NFO would be about like taking a Lotus to Daytona. The first 3 mos. of my IA, I thought of myself as a precision torque wrench being used to hammer nails.

But, you're gonna love SERE...

I would think that if you went to Ranger school you would get stuck with an IA everytime the command needed to send someone. BUT there's nothing wrong with following you're dream.
When I was at the Academy I had some company mates go to airborne school but never heard of anyone going to Ranger school.

Mid Graduates From Ranger School

There's a guy in my class who was first in his class at Ranger School. He did it as part of his summer training. He's the first mid to ever do it. He got his chit to go denied several times though, it took him until 2/C (junior) year here to get it approved. Here's a link to an article about him.

Yep, he service selected specwar. Was the AF really that bad?

Hypothetically speaking of course......you know where terrorist leadership is...Do you A: Wake him up and then fly a slow mover over to drop leaflets to intimidate him. B: Drop the leaflets and then fly the fast mover over to wake him up and make him come outside to retrieve said leaflets. C: 500# precision-guided equalizer on his abode. CSAR is not available for this mission. The logical answer is C, B, and A as an idiotic last resort. Answers B and C in the AF environment....had this not been a hypothetical situation, got blank stares and looks of confusion. That is what you get for having a "Strategy" billet filled by a dorky F-117 pilot with coke-can glasses.

The best way I have been able to describe the AF to my friends is this: It's like a bunch of helicopter mom's are running the show. The worst part is its not your mom so you just get that much more pissed off.

So what would their hypothetical justification be for not choosing C?

@loadtoad: Sounds like pure hell. The helicopter parents are out in full force here, at least with some of the kids who are applying. ask Wink about his experiences with them :icon_tong
