FY 08 Aviation Continuation Pay

Guys are getting left seat in Anchorage with UPS in 4 years making $14,000 dollars a month.

Seems low for a left seat.. Sounds reasonable for a 4th year right seater.. That is where I am at purple and orange and doing just a little under that amount...

Also some inaccurate data: (From APC)

Most junior captain hired: Sept 2000 (MD11/ANC)
Most junior lower 48 captain: Apr 1998 (757-767/ONT)

Bitter is good.. I was bitter.. But anger is NOT.. Navy was not fun anymore and the games were not for me to play.. And personally I think the IA policy is absurd and I even drilled with the PERS controlling IAs.. Trust me it is not what everybody is sold on it being.. But why so angry? Do your time and go... If some want to stay and play then inform but that is there decision.. You may have good gouge however they might not listen due to your tone and lack of control...

The more you make, the more you spend.....

It's all relative.. To me the quality of life is the better part of the deal.. I mean how many jobs will pay 6 figures to work 2 weeks a month (plus or minus a few days)?

I agree with you 100%. But I saw something the other day, see if I can get a .pdf somewhere of it. Anyways, since OIF started, there's been 30 Infantry Officer fatalities and 26 Aviation(Pilot) deaths. Unfortunately, it sounds like we're holding are own?
 
So, 3P4life.......I take it you're not taking the bonus? :) How does one get hired by an airline.....a major, legacy or cargo (the bigger ones at least) if they are a 3P for life. That means no PIC time correct? Unless of course it's not literal, just a metaphor of who you are. If you're only a 3P, my guess is you would probably wish you took that little bonus.

Oh no brother, 3p4Life is a state of mind not my crew position. I've lurked on this site without contributing for some time, but the bonus thing just set me off. Back to the thread.

Look, every other service uses a set number across the board for a bonus. It's not dependant on platform or what year you accepted the bonus. It's the same every year. Not for Marines. Why should a guy who fly's a V-22 be paid any more for doing the same damn job as a guy who drives something else? Say what you want, I've heard all the same cliches, but this sort of program drives a wedge between communities. We are all a part of the same team and share the same risks and skill sets.

There is a perfect storm brewing right now across Marine Aviation, and you can either bury your head in the sand or you can speak up about it. The handwriting is on the wall. OSO's are having a harder time finding people that will sign up. OCS had to adjust it's allowable attrition rate this past summer. The Major's promotion board had to go 10 months below zone to find enough Captains. I don't have the most recent numbers, but of all the eligible helo pilots 180+took the bonus last year. A friend of mine in manpower said it was around 50 for fixed wing. To add to this, the airlines haven't even begun to crank up their hiring, but it's about to go critical mass. At my first interview last month, only 2 of the 12 were civilians. Don't believe me go to any fixed wing squadron and ask the FDO about how many recruiters have called lately. I am telling you it's out of control.

So again I say this bonus does nothing to address those problems. We are heading for a pilot shortage of biblical proportions and nobody is willing to admit it. Instead we hear the same old same old about how we should not do this for money, but rather do the noble thing and stay the course. Someone already brought up "dead grunts don't get a bonus." What!!!?? Do you guys work at HQMC? Are you really that blind? Put down your USAA Retired Officer Quarterly and pick up the clue phone. This bonus is going to cause problems, huge problems.
 
As far as grunts not getting a bonus, I fully understand why they don't and pilots do. However, 3P's last post was a bunch of crying about how rough life is. Regardless of how many airline offers you've got, there are a lot of Marines who've got a lot harder life out there and aren't getting any extra silver in the pocket for it. Look, you like the Big Green Gun Club, stay. You don't, leave. Don't go bitching about the size of the bonus is when there are a whole bunch of guys who are sticking it out with no possibility of getting extra money for just doing their jobs.

I took a $7K bonus for helo pilots during a year when the rumor mill said next year's would be 0, because phrogs were at 115% of TO. I was pissed to some extent, when a year later it got raised to 18K. You know what? The E-dogs get their reenlistment multiples changed several times a year and there's no huge outcry there.

Newsflash--The Marine Corps is stingy with money. So it allocates its bonus money to T/M/S where it's short. It is a lagging indicator. Maybe we'll be short next year, but I'm sure there will be enough guys who sac-up and answer the call.

3P: Same comments but you have everybody on the defense due to your TONE.. So even if they agree, they aren't going to listen.. Also, if/since you are getting out.. Who cares about the bonus (goods, bads, unfair, etc) Do you really have a dog in this fight?

And before you get the wrong impression- I think the Bonus system is a joke.. More times than not all the folks I knew that took it were staying in regardless.. It wasn't an incentive to anything.. :confused:

I think he was using (Though Partly Inaccurate) an example of movement within the airline biz.. You don't have to go ANC to make those dollars but it will get you the check faster... It's all about the timing.. At Fred's Flying Club, we had new hires directly into the MD-11 in ANC; however, I was able to hold a widebody at the 1 & 1/2 year mark at MEM.. I could have gotten to ANC a lot faster but choose the later cause I couldn't fathom living in ANC... Clear as mud?

I'm not "company." I don't care whether someone stays in or gets out if they served well during their obligated service. Thanks for playing. I just can't stand wanking. If the bonus is good enough for you, take it. If not, don't, leave, whatever. Just STFU and quit complaining.
 
Phrog: Agree.. Somewhat.. Not trying to imply you are company but more your argument is more indicative of the "Company's" or that is what I mean't... He does need to stop wanking but he does have a legit arugment but it is lost in his anger... Well.. At least in my little brain, I know what I am trying to say but somewhere between those cells and my fingers on the keyboard, the thought is lost.. Oh well.. Moral of the story; opinions and disagreements are good (that is the foundation of democracy).... And depending on experiences (life and career) our perspectives can differ significantly... :)
 
When the Navy bonus was created, there was that issue of pilots leaving for the airlines. It wasn't of biblical proportions but it was a shortage. It comes and goes, just like a SIN wave. The military has been through it before and will come out just like before.

agreed ... dudes who take the bonus are staying in anyways, whether the bonus was there or not.

but a bigger joke than the bonus system IMO is involuntary separation pay ... dudes who know they are getting out of the Corps, gaming the system to get double P'd thus forced out, and then receiving the $60k or more for getting "involuntary" separated ... and the kicker is this - the handful of dudes I know who did this got accepted to fly in the Marine & Navy Reserves and got promoted to O-4 within a year (and are flying for major airlines) ... now that's a joke (on the Marine Corps)
