I've been in that situation before.... take my advice with a grain of salt since my starter marriage was legally dissolved 2 years ago.

If you're going to talk, make sure it's just before you go to sleep. It's easier that way. Along those lines, never go to bed angry at each other; you've already seen how fun the distance can be, so don't make it any worse by adding animosity to the mix. Get family plan cell phones and/or unlimited mobile to mobile, and let him know you need to talk more. Email. Send love notes. Flowers (for you). Porn (for him, and you). Plan a vacation together. Try to be with each other during the holidays. It may not always work, but at least make sure the other one knows you're thinking of them

Pretty soon the two of you will have to make a choice: Career, or marriage? I know precisely one couple (out of 6 I know) who has made a LDR work longer than a year and a half before calling it quits. Don't play the odds because they're not in your favor.
 
My husband and I have been on different career paths since the day we commissioned. He is (Ok, will soon be. He wings in a few weeks) a Marine helo pilot and I am a Navy NFO. The only time we have lived together was for 8 months while he was stashed at MATSG and did API, and while I was in Primary/Intermediate. Though it is not guaranteed we have tried to get it so that we are at least stationed on the same coast. I will be headed to Point Magu and hopefully he will get Pendleton. We are both realistic and understand that we will probably never be stationed together as long as one of us remains in the military.

It's not easy and you have to have a really solid relationship with the person to deal with distance. Talk everyday in some fashion or another, even if it is only a text message. Also, if you have been apart from each other for a bit, expect to have to get used to having that person around again. Understand that there are bumps and work through them if they come up. Good luck.

For those who make this kind of thing work, God bless, but don't people factor these things in when getting involved in a relationship in the first place? Maybe it's masochism, maybe stupidity, or maybe you're just letting life wash over you like a tidal wave without thinking ahead. Yes, I'm being critical (as is my nature ;)), but I'm just interested in people's thought process.

Warning: If the concept of "soul mate" is used or implied, I WILL vomit. :D
