The point of it isn't to prosecute anyone. Regardless of their accuracy, the administering agencies place enough stock in them to use as a basis for hiring and firing.

I understand that. I guess I was combining the two. In other words how reliable can they be if they are not admissible in court. I know the purpose of the polygraphs. I'm just questioning as to how accurate are they really if courts won't even allow them.

They have not always caught people that they should have, Ames is an excellent eample. However, I know for a fact that it has caught people that it should have.

It is just one tool of many that is used to try and weed out people who should not be working in certain jobs, whether for spying or for other reasons.

I think part of the reason they're not admissable in many courts is because of the implications that would have. Like if we think you are guilty of a crime we polygraph you and if you fail it you're guilty. Forget courts, if the system put enough stock in the polygraph you wouldn't even need them. Just polygraph someone and then sentence accordingly...

They are not admissable because they are not completely reliable, and you can fool them if you are good. Ames did.
