Ohhhh......... I love it when the spouses start talking trash about airplanes. It's even better when they argue about it with each other.

Even more fun still is watching the fangs come out at the Christmas party when somebody brings a seemingly meaningless airplane/helicopter/work-related toy to the white elephant gift exchange and the competition that ensues! Well, fun for the single people to watch, hehehe.

I did a little reading, and it looks like the Super Tucano has almost 2x the range of an OV-10 and can go about 100mph faster. But having only 1 engine sucks.

Can it be navalized for carrier ops?

After reading "A Lonely Kind of War" by Marshall Harrison it seems like flying Broncos would be pretty farking cool.

I'd think loiter time and survivability would be more important than speed and range for a COIN bird?

The Super Tucano is currently in use by the Colombian and Brazilian Air Forces, that I know of. I know the Colombian Air Force uses it in its anit-guerilla operations against the FARC primarily in the southern part of the country. It has proved to be quite useful for them. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but it would definitely be fun to fly.

Aren't loiter time and range the same? It seems like if you can go 400km then that could either be 200km out and 200km back or it could be 100km out, 200km loiter, and 100km back.

Loiter time and range aren't exactly the same, but they are interdependent. Range would probably most often refer to max range, combat radius would be the range you can go with X amount of stores and Y amount of on-station time. As with everything, it's mission dependent...

Loiter time is measured in time (i.e. 1-2 hours). For example helos can loiter much longer than fast movers can, but the fast movers can get a whole lot farther on a bag of gas.

The Super Tucano can loiter (max endurance airspeed) over an operational area for up to 6 hrs. No T-6 or Pilatus can approach that. With 40% more horsepower than those a/c, it has to haul more stuff as well. This seems like the a/c needed for the spec ops mission.

I was going to say something snarky about the AF and Navy choosing different aircraft for a similar mission, but I see there is a big difference.

In all seriousness, where will the pilots come from? Will they send out an MARADMIN/NAVADMIN type of memo dictating the criteria like they did for the Osprey?

IMHO the Bronco would be a better choice. American, two spinners, longer loiter time, better cockpit visibility. Putting some P&Ws on there might match or exceed the range of the Tucano? And apparently we gave it a shot at the amphib ops already. Just sayin.

But whatever the high brass chooses, I'm in. It would be cooler to have an actual trigger on a turboprop than the rudder-shaker-test switch/gun simulator we have now. ;)
