Hi... I have heard NAS Pensacola offers a Motorcycle Safety Course which is an introductory course on motorcycle basics. Does anyone have any information as to when it's offered, what its like, and how to sign up (phone numbers, etc.)? Thanks!

Its an awesome course led by some cool guys. Talk to your safety officer or find the base safety office. I don't remember where its at, but there is a very nice lady who works in that office, she will set you up with all the info you need. You will sign up on a list for a specific date (there is usually a waiting list). The classes are held on Fri 1600-1900ish, then Sat starting at 0700 or so, going till about 1300. Same hours on Sunday. The Sat and Sun classes are the ones where you will actually ride. They will supply you with just about everything, you have to bring gloves, a long sleve shirt, reflective vest, jeans and boots. You can use one of their smaller bikes (which I reccomend if you are new to this) or you can bring your big hog ... be aware that some of the tight turns you make will be hard on a big bike. You can go to any class on a Friday as a 'standby'. If someone doesn't show, first come first serve, you get to fill their spot.
PM me for any other info.

Thanks so much for the info! I definitely want a small bike, since I only weigh 120lbs. I'm up here at Whiting, where do you think I can find the phone number for NASP's base safety office? Maybe I should talk to my squadron's safety-o?

The Pass/Tag office down at NASP could tell you where the office is at. Thats the best I can do for ya. Definitely do the course if you can, they teach you a lot about stuff you dont really think about but can save your a$$ when you need it. Good luck.

Very good course, I took it abut 4 years ago. We actually did the riding portion at Corry. I took my big hog ther and did just fine, plus it was first bike ever.

I have the fun job of being the Ground Safety Officer for my squadron. Here's the info that I have on this for ya.
It's not only just a good course, but it's also a requirement to complete it by Navy and Marine Corps orders if you plan on riding anywhere....not just on base. The course offered here won't provide you with any of the safety gear you are required to have to ride, but they will provide you with a loner bike if you need one. Generally it's a Honda Rebel 250cc. I don't know if P'cola is the same way... I didn't take the course there.
You can opt to take the course out in town, however, if you do plan to pay A LOT!! my old roommate from flight school took it at the Harley dealership and it cost him almost $300. If you have the time, definitely wait for the free course offered on base.
As far as exactly what you are going to learn... The Motorcycle Safety Foundation website lays out all the details of the course for you. Their website is www.msf-usa.org

I hope that this has helped...
If you have any other questions feel free to message me.

The gouge so far is good, just contact the people the pass/tag office people suggest.

They do have bikes you can use, the Honda rebels. They go fast though, so if you need to use a bike expect to sign up for a class about two months down the road. If you don't need a bike, you'll have to wait 3-4 weeks for an open date. However, you can show up as a walk-in, that's how I did it. It's not always guaranteed for walk-ins, so when they give you the show up time, be there about an hour early and you should be able to get in. If you have your own bike they're fine with that too.

I have been riding since '69 or so when I first crawled on a 69 Sporty.

I was very pleasantly surprised to learn a few things about bike riding. The basics may bore you, but don't fret; you will come away from the course with a good bit more confidence than the day you began the course.

It is indeed a good deal.

Yeah, good point. I grew up riding dirtbikes but I learned a few things about slow speed handling, etc, that I hadn't ever really thought about before.

Never been on a bike. I want to see what its like... I love going fast (even though I'm a helo person). Actually, I kind of just want to piss off my dad. Seriously though, I've wanted to do it for a long time and so now I am getting around to it. I'd love a sportbike, something fast... like a Ducati or a Vespa or something (jk), but I really know nothing about them. Just want to see how it is first and go from there.

May I reccomend a Triumph? There is a good dealer in Pcola, and support in JAX, SD and NORVA.

Euro bike, but Bonnevilles are more beginner friendly without being outgrown.

Never gotten a chance to ride one, but I would die for a Triumph. :D
