For those of us who weren't around (well in the Navy anyway) then, what was the story with USS Ranger? Another underfunded post-Cold War political football? Wikipedia seems to have nothing to say on the subject . . .
If the Ranger was scheduled to relieve you on cruise, you could be guaranteed of one thing........you'd be extended, because the Dangerboat would be broke dick somewhere.

The 'Hawk has @ one more cruise left in her and I think she's comin' home .... next year .... ???

And just to be the exception that "breaks" the rule ... the 'Hawk was a great ship for most of the time I was on her ... one bit of engineering trouble dogged her for a while --- engine room explosion --- we actually went to abandon ship stations during the fire --- but she still made speed for flight ops with no natural wind and no bingo fields after the Joe's fixed her in Subic ... not bad for a temporarily sick ship. The rest of the time she was as good as any ....

Look at how long she's carried her weight. A pig-boat can't do that ... not for all those years.

In the '80's she was called the shitty Kitty.

The mornings are worse, normally. Wonderwood has solved most of the BAD Mayport Rd traffic issues.

Thank god for Wonderwood, I can't imagine what it was like before. The traffic isn't bad as long as you don't need to be in at 7. Rumor has it that JFK and the base had a spat, they used to stagger their watch rotation so every ship in the basin wasn't trying for the gate at exactly the same time, no so anymore. It'll be interesting to see if the new "automated" gates help.

Just imagine how bad it was when there was no Wonderwood and TWO CVs!

The Shitty Kitty name lives on to the 21st century.
Or as I used to refer to her to the local JNs, "Kitanai-Hawk".

Went back to Japan on a trip to Tokyo, there's a pub in Roppongi that named a drink the Kitty Hawk, description on the menu: "hard to drink, but can't stop drinking."

Wow...after some have said less than kind things about the Kitty Hawk I expected A4s to take (bring?) umbrage with the disparaging remarks, followed by a gauntlets-off, double-fisted defense of her honor. Instead, a more heart-felt plea was in order; I'm guessing a few cocktails caused this mellowing?:D

Naaaaaahhhhh .... no hydraulic mellowing .... the nattering nabobs just don't know any better. :)

I liked the 'Hawk. She was part of my youth. She was my home for a while. I liked the sea; I liked the Navy -- still do. Just tellin' the truth and being loyal to one of my old ships .... :)

still doing 30 knots...

Well, it's been a good 3 three years on the JFK (finishing up my dis-a tour).
The capper? We get to sing happy birthday to Ted Kennedy in Boston in two weeks.
19 years in the Navy and now this.
So, cat 3 isn't exactly "level", the old girl still does 30 knots...
I've been on a few boats, and she's not that bad for not being out of the water for over 10 years.

If that day ever comes, it will be because someone at the Bureau was asleep at the switch. :D

LOL, but... the other day a former TOPGUN instructor (who bailed in the dot.com fever era) was talking to me and appeared really upset at who screened in his year group......reason that didn't occur to him: all the talent exited stage left and guess who was left? You never know....not saying that is your situation, but never say never!
