UPDATE: from the CMP website ....

LATEST CMP SALES NEWS - 23 MAR 2007.

M1 CARBINE SALES. We have started the inspection of the M1 Carbines that were recently transferred to the CMP. Because the carbines were received with the bolts removed and many are in heavy preservative, the process is taking longer than expected. We will begin accepting carbine orders for Inland carbines on 30 April, 2007. The Inland carbines are priced at $495 (!!!) each. Carbine orders received prior to 30 April will be returned to the sender. Other manufacturers will not be available until later in the year.

We are not accepting orders or establishing waiting lists at this time.
Please see http://www.odcmp.com/rifles/carbine.htm.

The CMP will post new information as it becomes available.

Now, if only I didn't have to spend $1000 on license fees, gun safes and trigger locks just to get a single rifle... /jealous

I picked these two up a few years ago for $575 total.

My brother in law was in a CA mid coastal city looking at mates for his Siberian Husky. Turns out the lady was a widow, her husband died during the 1989 October earthquake. Anyway, they started talking and she mentioned that she was having trouble cleaning out some of his stuff. In the basement were 5 gun safes. Not entirely full, but there were enough things there to get a lot of interest after he called me. She wanted little for most of the guns (we showed her a current gun digest) and was happy to get rid of them. I was happy to buy them. Picked up two NIB H-K flare launchers for $40, along with many other guns and related stuff.

The Carbine has some sort of proof mark? on the stock; can't quite make it out.

There's a couple of us that interested in taking a plane up to Anniston to check this place out (and maybe even hand pick a weapon if they let us), but I was wondering if the above really matters. Is "Inland" a good gun maker? Is there a better GI company to wait for and get? I'd guess it probably wouldn't matter when you're getting a piece of history, but thought I'd ask.

There you go ... get a "piece of history" for $495 ... it's a steal. Most "shooters", including "parts guns" with replacement stocks and "imports" (re-imported into the US after military assistance transfers decades ago) sell in the $495-$795 regions.

These will not be $2000-$3000 "collector guns" ... they will be Service grade or Rack grade with mixed parts and replacement stocks ... reference the CMP website --- but still --- getting ANY USGI firearm from a U.S. arsenal is a rarity these days ....

Inland had the largest M1 Carbine contract ... they made the most, so it's not too surprising that they represent the leading edge of these CMP sales.

They are all good, as they are MilSpec guns. Inland was a division of GM that made the most M1 Carbines.

So from a rarity/collector standpoint they are worth less than a Rockola or IBM. From a Shooter standpoint, no real difference.

...would be Anniston. :)

Regarding the actual question, thanks MB and A4s. I figured as much. It wouldn't be for a monetary investment, just having a piece of history that I can go make noise with. Shot a buddies CMP Garand a couple of range visits recently, and it sure is easy to buy into the allure.

BUMP/UPDATE: As of the end of May, the CMP is apparently plumb out of M1s till October. Was finally in the market for one too (condo sucked up all my money). Oh, well . . . hope they don't run out too soon.

Thanks for telling everyone...:icon_rage;)

This is what I'm planning on replacing my stolen Garand with. I reasoned it out that since I likely couldn't replace the history (SA 1941...serial number carried by a single Marine throughout the Pacific war) I might as well get the nicest one I could.

Seriously good deal folks.

That's a shame ... as the one you describe, especially with any provenance and in good condition would have brought big bucks.

As it is -- most of the DCM/CMP Garands have doubled in cost over the past 2-3 years -- all grades.

*edit* I can't believe they are charging today for National Match Type 1 & 2 and M1D's .... incredible when you look at their recent prices --- again a couple of years ago. And they're not even mint ...
