After the Navy?

What do you guys do after you've fulfilled your commitment to the Navy? Get a job? Go into grad school? Does spending those four years in active service dull your edge or slow you down when you come back to civilian life?
 
There's a bunch of threads on this, but in short, the 4, or more like 8-10 years for aviators, actually makes you much more competitive "out there," depending on what you're looking for.
 
I agree. Most start their "second career" doing whatever they would have done had they not joined the Navy (grad school, med school, business, etc). Most now have whole new career options open to them based on the training and experience they got in the Navy (for example, pilots going on to the airlines).

When you think about it, the 4, 10, or even 20 years that someone stays in the military is only a fraction of the 40-50 year working life that most adults today will have.
 
I was a pilot who got out in 1985. Thank god I didn't go with the airlines. I went to a top five business school for an MBA. I was nervous about how tough it would be. What a piece of cake! The civilian world has absolutely no idea how tough it is in the military. No idea. Unfortunately, the idea that employers like to hire ex-military is bull****, at least at the high end. I would have investment banking interviews with candy assed little Ivy league pricks who just couldn't believe that anyone with any brains would serve in the military. I'm serious. They would ask me if I killed anyone, tell me that they thought about doing the same thing ( bull****) and ask stupid question after another. I remember one class I was in, the professor noted (rather hostily) that I was an ex-military pilot and asked me why I didn't fly for the airlines. I told him that I didn't fly planes for the sake of flying planes, I flew planes so I could blow **** up. I would pay good money for a picture of his face when I said that. I thought he was going to faint. Anyway, I got a great job and couldn't have been happier ever since. Just be aware that when you interview with an IBM or Goldman Sachs that no one there has a military background. Ironically, a military background will help tremendously towards getting into a good graduate school. They all want "diversity" and a military officer (in their minds) is almost as good as getting a panda bear for the local zoo.
 
I had heard that Harvard had a special grad admissions program for ex-military. Does anyone know details? I would like to get a bit of gouge before I contact their admissions dept.

I'm sure you have tried it, but does their website say anything?
 
I think the sky's the limit for an officer or aviator after the military. For pilots, there's the airlines but so much more as well. I have yet to make up my mind as to what I wish to do but haven't ruled out anything...........except porn star. Just wasn't blessed for that :( :)
 
I don't think that most graduate schools, including Harvard, have a dedicated, seperate section for military applicants. I do believe that military applicants get a closer look as they are so unusual compared to their typical applicant. You get into these programs by being different from, not the same, as the rest.
