Listened to the ATC audio. Horrific. From above FL350 to impact in less than a minute.
Longer audio prior to the event has ATC telling them about the cell and saying they can deviate left or right to avoid. They then fly right through it. I know nothing about that aircraft so I wonder if it had weather radar and if that disagreed with what ATC told them.VAS edited their video and now it's text only.
I know we'll probably never know, but I'd be interested to know what they were seeing in the cockpit that had them go through what we see as a big cell. I had an flight back to my base earlier this summer where I was shooting a gap, confirmed by both my onboard radar and visually. We were definitely closer to a cell than I would have liked to be, but we were completely VFR, completely in the clear, and could see the airport 10+ miles away.
Meanwhile my OCC called and said that I was IN a thunderstorm and I needed to land immediately (which would have been an absolutely dumb thing to do). I offer that as an example of what a tracker or radar shows isn't necessarily reality.
I listened to it last night. Would not recommend.I listened to it earlier today. Its jarring.
Listened to the audio. Wish I hadn’t. Absolutely terrible tragedy.
I haven’t flown a helicopter in a long time and still occasionally remember the audio from the MOJO 69 mishap out of the blue.Same. Someone sent it to me before I knew of the crash and I didn't realize what it was. One thing the ASO course taught me was that listening to someone's last words is absolutely heartbreaking.
Last time I did the dunker, they did a breakdown of that flight for the Spatial Disorientation part of the class. Tough one to listen to, for sure.I haven’t flown a helicopter in a long time and still occasionally remember the audio from the MOJO 69 mishap out of the blue.
