Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

Well not hot and not new - about an interesting story about the AF experience with the H-60 platform and its twists and turns in acquisition. A good read.

"Quietly, though, and off nearly everyone’s radars,a small group of “insurgent” staff officers kept the H-60 program alive. Those officers used other people’s programs, other people’s money, and other people’s people to eventually field USAF’s MH-60G Pave Hawks that have served the nation so capably and honorably for the last thirty years. This is those insurgents’ story."

That reads like a bad FITREP bullet.

Looks like Army has come full circle on this...

I swear, the Army is the slow kid in the class eating glue in the corner.

"Both students said radio calls remain the biggest challenge as they shift between military and civilian terminology.

'You have to know who you are talking to, what you need to say and how to say it,' Suerth said."

Kid ain't wrong, but that's kind of Flying 101 stuff. If you're leaving flight school and you've never flown in the national airspace system, your flight school kinda sucks.

How'd the Army get this far off track, even GA students are immersed in the NAS from day one.

Was this a overly corrective response to a mishap or perceived issue?

The fact that they reached this point, that a solo cross country is even a news worthy matter, is the real concern here.

This was a very controversial move in AF land. Procuring additional MH-139 was considered a non-starter for some reason. In a high density pax (e.g. offshore) configuration the 139 would be ideal.

The AF HH-60W is the *only* CSAR helicopter in US military inventory. To use this aircraft for a domestic non-combat continuity of government mission seems illogical.

These will replace the 24 Hueys that stand rapid alert 24/7/365 that while beautifully maintained are barely capable at mission weight.

Because politicians want all the tacticool stuff on their “get to da choppa!” helicopters? Bumps, boxes, probes, mounts, and such are cool and will keep our aged politicians from getting shot down by the common folk. That’s my guess.

You answered your own question in saying that the Hueys are barely MC at design weight. The requirements drive what is picked.

And another perspective, you go to a single airframe for I/Depot level efficiency as well as maintainer knowledge basis. It also offers flexibility in aircrew detailing. Just because you can have the equipment, doesn’t mean that the aircraft has to have the equipment to do that specific mission right now. However, it is also easy to add on the capability in an emergency.

And for the love of all things holy, please spit out the ‘Only USAF does CSAR Zyn’.
