Random Griz Aviation Musings

Billings Fliying Service doing USFS Carded Training syllabus in the CH-47D: (left seater sporting a standard Navy HGU-84/P)

CAP participating in TFR defense scenario exercise in NorCal (in support of SuperBowl)- with the F-15's out of Fresno, CA. CAP aircraft is a Cessna Turbo 206H. This is a 2012 model T206H. Typical of the CAP fleet. Newer 206s are coming from Cessna factory equipped with Teledyne FLIR/EO on the port side of fuselage.

Moffett Field based 172 also getting in on the action. The CAP Volunteers love this stuff. and they are good at it. The fighter guys all have seperate "low speed intercept" quals to maintain. This helps them out quite a bit.

Here's the video - my 1st AF colleagues in Tyndall ran a whole Public Affairs Ex on preps for Super Bowl and AF ANG, CAP and other 1AF units in their Homeland Defense missions. A swarm of print, Social Media, Broadcast news, and social media video. The Air Force really gets the importance of public affairs. (Pay attention Navy PA folks!)

Last night Arizona LE helo crashed in Flagstaff after providing support over a moving gun battle with suspect firing at civilians and police from roof tops and back yards with a semi auto long gun.

Both helicopter crewmen deceased. No names yet. The pilot was a 10 year USMC aviator hired by Az DPS in May 2021. Hope no one here lost a friend.
Pilot was LCOL Robert Skankey (ret) He was a a ASO school grad and HMX 1 vet. Served as a Supervisory pilot for Arizona Department of public Safety.

Video of aircraft beacon and impact site looks like a vertical descent.

Served as a Supervisory pilot

I'm assuming that means he wasn't sworn, correct? I noticed they list him as "End of Service" versus the Trooper, who is listed as "End of Watch." I didn't realize ADPS had that option.

I don’t know about ADPS, but a good number of Virginia departments (police and sheriff) utilize employee pilots (non-sworn) and sworn observers. At least two use volunteer pilots.
