What are you reading?

Project Hail Mary... from Andy Weir (The Martian) is an entertaining read that I'm nearing the end of. Movie coming out in a few months. Very sciencey like The Martian. Basic premise is that the sun is dying and they send our protagonist on an interstellar voyage to find a solution. Lots of twists and turns. Definitely recommend for some light reading.

Read that a couple of years ago. Looking forward to seeing the movie this spring. If you enjoy that kind of sci-fi vibe, Seveneves is in the same general vein- it’s come up in this thread before.

Be interesting how the movie goes down, the book was really detail oriented.

I just finished The Tangled Tree, a book about how our thinking on the emergence of life has evolved. It talks through how Darwin came up with his theory of evolution, and then how that got seriously undermined/revised by discoveries emerging from the revolution in molecular biology.

The tree of life is really a mesh network, bottom line.

By delving into the lives of the scientist who brought about this radical rethinking, it is also a good lesson about what it takes to have a vision and see it through to the finish line in the face of doubts.

Funny meme, but the stories are different. The protagonist is trying to survive while rescuing humanity rather than trying to survive while humanity rescues him. If you didn't read anything about the book before reading it, there's a nice twist midway through that I think the movie trailers have already spoiled. I really enjoyed the book and hope the film lives up to it.

Agreed- the Hail Mary trailer I saw seemed very disjointed and spoiler-ish, at least to someone who has read the book. I would personally have gone with a "man sets off on unknown voyage" or "man awakens not knowing where he is" vibe for the trailer, and let the rest be a surprise.

Hopefully this one stays faithful to the book, while appealing to people who haven't read it.
