I had a person that was in a similar situation, my applicant let me know could no longer go, lost the OCS date. Then a few weeks later I received a call explaining that a family member was in ill health and not going to get better, this family member was then very unhappy my applicant had withdrawn from the opportunity to be a USN officer. The relative basically said you can't put your life on hold for me I would rather you be out there living your life and being able to see you do well. We were able to get the selection turned back on and this person has been quite successful. I don't know the specifics of your situation but would recommend you talk to your family and get their input.
I got selected for OCS for next summer but family situation has changed (family member health) that I’m considering not going.

What are some possible consequences for backing out? I have not signed contracts except a letter saying I intend on going.
... is spot on. While we don't know the specifics, if I was sick and a family member turned down an "once in a lifetime" opportunity like serving (or something along those lines) as a commissioned officer, I would be upset, especially if it wasn't communicated ahead of time and/or other alternative solutions to take care of the family member. I understand family is very important, but at the same time you ought to discuss the situation with family first... there's a good chance someone else can support while you go off to chase your dreams.

On the other end, if you're the sole lifeline to this family member, you really need to start looking at other employment or means to provide care. Not if not eventually, you are going to have to start paying the bills, finding a place to live, pay student loans (if applicable), etc.

My recruiter has gotten me into an odd situation and I'd love some advice on the best way forward. I'm an off-the-street Officer applicant.

My recruiter incorrectly put in my application with SNFO as first choice and CW as second choice, instead of SNA, CW, then SNFO. I was selected for SNFO and was never considered for CW since I got selected for SNFO. Now, my recruiter wants me to decline SNFO in order to re-apply as a Reconsideration for SNFO with SNA as first choice. My age waiver will also need to be redone in this scenario.

Do I have any other option given my application was submitted with the wrong list of designators? I don't like the idea of declining SNFO and then re-applying for it because he messed up.

Will being a Reconsideration applicant hurt my chances of getting SNA, or SNFO again?

Any insight you can provide about the reconsideration process would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

From my knowledge, SNA is closed for fiscal year 26. A lot of IWC boards are shutdown too because of being over strength at the moment. High chance if you resubmit you won't get any of the other options.

SNFO often has a greater selection rate, it is possible if you had been submitted SNA first that the board would not have accepted your waiver, but you just don't know. Now you would have the issue of having a decline, needing a waiver that may or may not be approved this time around, or be accepted by the board this time around as you will not be able to complete 20 years of service prior to mandatory retirement.

If you decline SNFO be aware that could be the end of your USN journey but you need to do what is best for you.

You’re not eligible for CW, age limit cannot be waived.

As what was said before, it can be a gamble declining only to not ever have a chance again.

I really appreciate the insight and it confirms much of what I suspected. My top choice is SNA and, for me, I can’t give up on that at any cost.

I’m considering dropping SNFO mainly to avoid the Reconsideration tag. CW is still an option (the PA you linked to says age is waiverable. It was INTEL that recently did away with any waivers).

Would that give me a “fresh” look? I realize I’ll still need a new age waiver and it’s all a gamble. I’m just wondering if avoiding Reconsideration is a better option towards SNA.

If you drop SNFO you have to reapply / reconsideration and explain why.

The program authorization I linked is for CW and it states age can’t be waived beyond 42.

I apologize but I'm confused by your response. I never went to board for SNA or CW. Are you saying I would be a reconsideration applicant even if I was never considered for these designators before?

Regarding CW, the PA states, "This requirement can be waived." Am I missing something else?

If you decline a selection you have to explain why and then they can either decide to let you apply or not.

You are also missing the part that mandatory retirement age is 62, the only people I have seen be allowed to come in that wouldn't be able to get 20 years in before mandatory retirement age were Doctors, Chaplains, and Scientist.
