Agree with the quality of the writing. The idea, however....I'm not sure what to make of how much consideration I've been giving it.

Yes, you should totally retire to a country where people play baseball without shoes because of the miniscule chance it allows them to immigrate to the US. Sounds like they have a fantastic quality of life, low crime rates, and booming commerce to go along with the cheap cost of living, and their country certainly isn't completely destroyed every few years by a cat 5 hurricane.

Retiring overseas isn't an awful idea, but the author picked 3 bottom half countries to live in that are marginally better than failed states in Africa.

Teenage me had a half black / half Korean coworker where we had to maintain the park grounds. We're cleaning / de weeding the entrance and my coworker decides he's going to greet everyone with ni hao ma today because that's something a 17 year old finds funny. Half a dozen white people walked by with confused faces until an Asian woman stops in her tracks with smoke coming out her ears...

"I'm Korean"

Guy apologizes and begs for forgiveness but she wouldn't have it.

None of the “gentlemen” ExPats I observed living in Angeles were there because of any sort of quality of life that could be discussed in polite company or church. Walk down to the ATM where Fields and Mitchell Ave meet and just people watch for a bit.

Let’s be serious about the real motivation for a lot of guys with no strings attached going to retire in the same places as a disparate amount of Saudi and Korean bachelor parties.
 
Could also be a reflex. After being stationed in Japan I subconsciously equated being off base with Japanese being the default language. Didn’t realize how subconscious it was until literally the day after I moved back to the US, went to a Mexican place for lunch with a friend, and I said Hai to the bartender. My friend laughed her ass off.
