Hello,

A few months back, I went in blind and took my first ASTB and got a 5/3/5 57. Today, my second attempt landed me at 6/7/6 52. I studied for about a month and practiced whatever I could using the ASTB Prep App and the Gomez Drives, but I’m very disappointed in not having made 7/7/7 immediate select.

My recruiter says my scores are competitive to put in as a pilot, but the board (which I hear gets cancelled often, especially with the influx of those who want to become pilots) convenes in July and my result won’t be out by August.

Even with the risk of my third and final score being “worse”, I want to try taking it again in hopes of 7/7/7 or better.

With that said, I’m here to ask two things:
1. Should I put in my packet and hope for the best, or should I consider retaking ASTB for the final time? I’m 29, and I want to make it as a pilot ASAP, since my age is nearing the limit. I’m not sure what to do..
2. I’ve seen a lot of material that I don’t recall studying. For the ANIT, I’ve seen terms I haven’t come across in neither the Baron book, ASTB Prep, or Gomez Drives. I’ve also had questions that I don’t recall coming across while studying for the mechanical portion. In fact, I’ve hardly had any of the questions from the materials I’ve been studying. It seems I have to expand my resource repertoire.. does anybody have any more resources that I can use for my final take?

Also, during the Terrain portion, the computer started to freeze and the screen would only update every 5 seconds or so. The recruiter told me it’s a known issue, but it sucked a lot seeing the timer run down in chunks and having my selections be delayed by seconds twice, once when selecting the cardinal direction, and again when submitting the answer.

I personally don't think it would hurt to submit your packet for the next board and see if you get picked up. The board, as far as I am aware, prioritizes your ASTB score and GPA. If you don't get picked up, then I would recommend retesting. Not because your scores are bad but because you mentioned you're 19, so you don't want to keep reapplying to different boards if you keep getting passed on; that would only continue to bring you closer to the age limit.


I also personally don't think you'd do worse if you took it again. At the very least, I would say you'd get the same score as you got on the second attempt. I believe you would do better since you're studying on top of what you already studied for. And yeah, unfortunately, there are things not mentioned in the gouges or the tens of study guides listed in this forum that are on the test, so it's always best to try and cover what others have mentioned have been on previous exams. You'd think the Navy would have some official up-to-date study guide, but I guess not (you gotta tip it to those that made it before the gouges were compiled.)

Lastly, it's unfortunate that you're dealing with technical issues on the exam. Every time I took it, I also had some technical issues; even in the terrain portion, as you mentioned. Whatever servers they use to administer the exam is simply not cutting it anymore. Try to get more reps in the prep app, so even if you are short on time on the exam, you'll be able to respond quickly because of the reps. Also a tip: use like a slit of paper or anything that had a straight edge, for the terrain portion. It'll help you find the direction in which the aircraft is traveling much faster. It definitely beats eyeballing it on the app.

Thank you for your insight. I am still torn between retaking the test again in June or waiting for the board. I may even consider going in as NFO with my score, as I hear that there's also an opportunity for NFO to transfer over to Pilot once you're in. There's a lot to consider, and I hope I make the best choice for me and my family.

Thank you for the additional resources. I will start going over them now, in case I choose to retake the test. It truly is a blessing to have all the people who took the time to compile all these study materials!

And I see, it's the server that's causing the technical issues.. I'll have to improve my proficiency in all aspects of the tests then to account for those unfortunate events.
