Every gang shooting leave behind a cohort of people more willing to shoot their rivals the next time they have a chance. If violent gangs get a foothold, violent crime numbers will continue to grow there. In my experience, a lot of people don't get too worked up about it, as they figure they are immune due to the fact that they are not in gangs.

It isn't until a purely innocent victim** gets in the crossfire that the hand wringing starts, but at that point it is too late.

** as opposed to those that are engaged in the lifestyle. They still don't deserve to be victims of violent crime.
yep, like the mom of several kids up here that was killed due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Don't forget that at some point, Medicare kicks in to supplement Tricare (or Tricare may be considered the supplement). My parents (retired AF) live about 45 minutes from a large base with significant medical facilities. They see private docs and pay relatively little. It's not worth it to them to drive and deal with an MTF because the savings aren't huge.

Access to an MTF has zero bearings on our plans for where we end up. I'd much rather throw a little money at the problem and get decent, timely, reliable care.
The only time you should need an MTF is when you are really, really old. If you end up with a lot of meds the Medicare/Tricare/MTF combo can often zero out your prescription costs.

Expat life? I know a good amount of guys who have gone overseas and never looked back. Depending on where you go you can live like an absolute king.
I always forget about this option when this subject comes up. Definitely need to do some more research because it sounds like it could be a pretty good option depending on where you go.

Having lived overseas in several countries it can be a bit of a mixed bag, with many of the locales south of border being really hit and miss when it comes to stuff like medical care and legal issues. I saw some scenarios play out when I worked alongside the State Dept overseas with not so great or bad situations being greatly complicated not being in the good 'ol US of A. Pretty much turned my wife and I off to expat retirement except in an English-speaking first world country, which kinda narrows things down a bit.

This place has always fascinated me. Abandoned SAC base in NE Montana. The base housing is for the taking. Same sort of thing attracts me to old ICBM silos and abandoned off shore platforms. I think Boeing does some test flying out of it. Airport is still active.

We should all pitch in….make it an AW club house. Knock down the old housing and set up some rifle and skeet ranges, convert the old hangers to fancy loft lodgings a club and restaurants, put in a lake and stock it, add some terrain trails for the bikers and ATV types, and get a federal government fuel contract! F-18’s, P-8’s, plopters, rotors, and all our USN to ANG types can add it to their XC list. Tons of room for privately owned aircraft and even I could land the Griz-O-Copter on a runway long enough for B-52’s! We could even make it a hot stop on the air show and fly in list. Have an occasional AW fly-in with BBQ and a weekend of fun and we’d be all set.

They built Vegas in a freakin' desert. All it took was vision, and a place where no one would want to go outside.

Why not New Vegas in Southern Canada?

Very true, like anything it’ll vary on personal preference. I know a few guys in SE Asia that have absolute mansions on only their retirement. They also are well versed in the local language which definitely helped.

Many years ago had a Navy buddy get into trouble in Mexico. He swore he would never again travel anywhere (mil orders exempt, of couse) that was not governed by the US Constitution. That still leaves some fairly exotic places. While that is an oath I am not prepared to make, I think I could amend it as it regards a residence or property ownership.

An old B-52 base? One of the restaurants would have to be called The Love Shack.

A lot of states don't tax military retirement, so I wouldn't focus on only the no income tax states. Wisconsin definitely doesn't, but I won't see military retirement until Age 60. I also wouldn't want to anchor on commissary bennies or MTFs, but that's just me.

Even then, save for FL (tourists) and AK (oil) that can subsidize no income tax, the others (TN/WA/VT/etc) all make it up in various flavors of sales, personal property, property, etc or they just don't do shit like TN and road maintenance. No free lunch. There are outliers of NY/CA, but even TX is getting nuts. School tax and property tax combined in the Dallas suburbs gave me quite a shock when I was talking with a friend who moved there in the last 2 years, and they plan to leave.

Well then, this is precisely the argument for going to a state that may have income taxes, but as a benefit for service does not tax mil retirement. As you would have it, a state that has an income tax has more moderate taxes all around, or better services. So find one of those that doesn't tax mil retirement. BTW, was just reminded, AZ doesn't tax ANY mil pay, active duty, Guard/Reserve or retired.
