Questions about OCS

My other main concern is PT for OCS, if accepted. I have ramped up training since I heard back from the first board but am worried I will not be in OCS shape in time. In general, I am on the outside looking in on the PT requirements. Since college I have always enjoyed weight lifting, is this something I should completely substitute for OCS specific exercises?
Weight lifting isn't bad, just understand that the PT you'll do at OCS will be more focused on calisthenics and muscular endurance (e.g. holding a down push-up position, planks, etc.)

If you weight lift in the 3-6 rep range then shifting to a routine with an 8-12 rep range would probably be beneficial to set you up for OCS PT. However, I wouldn't worry about it too much; if your muscles are strong from weight lifting they will fairly rapidly adapt to the type of PT done at OCS.

The biggest thing: how's your cardio?

Man, I miss the clam chowder. Always looked forward to those days.

Clam chowder is definitely the best thing on the menu, but due in no small part to the fact Ney has no part in making it. The highlight of candio for me was definitely the omelette/smoothie combo.

They serve smoothies there? What is this, Jamba Juice. Lol sorry in my head, I'm imagining a dull ass cafeteria food reminiscent of elementary public school days. I hope it's better than that, I'll take any reprieve I can get and if it's only the food, I'll take it.

well, you would need to add in the whole "eat by numbers" thing, unless they don't do that anymore.

I really hope they don't. Even MC boot camp wasn't that strict... and we had dumb rules. We could only get blue powerade regardless of what we wanted. Grown ass men eating cocoa pebbles with blue powerade was a weird sight.

I graduated OCS yesterday but am SNA, so I can answer more of the second half of this than the first half. Form is the most important thing for the PFAs, endurance is the most important thing for the physical events. I would suggest the following:

Make sure your form complies perfectly with these:

I recommend you run 3 miles 3 times a week. If you don't already, start with 1 mile 3 times a week, and add a half mile every three weeks until you get to 3. Then try to bring your time down to below 24:30. Use all of this to consistently get an "outstanding high" PFA score for your age range (link below) before showing up. Is that required? No, not at all. Will that make this program easier? Yes, it definitely will. You won't sweat physical events, and RPT won't be so bad. Also, unless ROM goes away, you will lose muscle in the time between showing up and taking the IST, which will already be your lowest PFA score because of the general vibe. There are 3 PT tests spaced throughout the program that determine whether or not you can continue training. Do not worry about the minimums - all sorts of people max them out. You can too.

Lastly, I recommend you look up and be able to complete the following exercises for at least a minute each without stopping:

"Running plank" (mountain climbers, but your feet don't touch the ground when they come up)
"Side Straddle Hop" (jumping jacks)
Burpees
Lunges
Rear Lunges
Side Lunges
Wall Sits
V-Ups
6-inch Leg Holds
Leg Lifts
High Knees
Thank you! Congrats on graduating. I'm trying to be where you are in 3 months. Random aside, but I havent seen much about laundry. If we will be sweating and crawling through mud, is there a chance to wash our clothes? Where does that happen and when does that happen during all the craziness?

You have multiple sets of each uniform, so it’s matter of strategy on when to wear which sets and a matter of teamwork on making sure everyone gets a chance at the laundry machines.

Thanks! Also, are you allowed to say what happens in the two week period before class starts? My ship date is June 6 and class is June 20.

That’s ROM. When I did ROM, there were online modules we had to complete and two hours each day of self-guided PT. By the time I left though, they turned it into something much more structured. It looks like they’ll teach you some drill and chow hall procedures while you’re ROMing. Use the time to memorize bravo and get used to waking up at 0430.

Candio phase is pretty nice when it comes to chow. You're allowed to get desserts and drink coffee again which a lot of people take advantage of since you can't have it beforehand. But otherwise yeah, it's basically just cafeteria food.
