The Monster COD thread (homage to the C-2A Greyhound)

I was sitting on deck, they stuck a screwdriver in a WOW switch to test something else. Sitting in the chocks, brakes set, at ground idle.

Dual EPC FAIL lights, both props up on the BUG at 103% and a hell of a yaw kick in the airframe. If that happened going down the runway in the ground range, I'd probably have a Class A in my logbook.

This was just jiggling WOW switches to see why I had AOA indexers on deck. Not even troubleshooting any prop issues.

The September 28th issue of the Navy Times has an article on page 17 titled....Osprey could take over C-2's carrier-delivery mission. I always thought with the 48 the Navy agreed to buy would be used as COD's. Doesn't mean it's going to happen but it might.

Wasn't Skippers Basden and Reed proponents of the Osprey? I remember that they had pretty good opinions of it, especially after talking with the Bell rep at Tailhook a few years ago.

From a helo guy turned hummer clown, The Osprey can't deliver the cube or the weight the COD can at the same ranges, in the same Wx.

But what do I know?

But it does have the advantage of being not old and busted, proven and available now. It could very well end up being one of those "don't let good be the enemy of perfect" situations.

I remember back in 97-98 time frame hearing that the Osprey would replace the COD.

10 yrs later we hear the rumor again. I also remember the same thing from back then also, the Osprey couldn't carry as much or as far as the current workhorse.

Old and busted maybe but talk about proven! All they would need to do is open up an assembly line and what spend a couple hundred million (not billion) to replace the entire fleet. Maybe not exactly that easy but heck if they would have done it 10 yrs ago maybe Bunk would have smelled the inside of a COD that reminded him of new leather. :icon_rage

Doesn't the Osprey carry like 15k lbs? Doesn't the COD only carry 10k, of which 25% is taken up by that cage in the back?

That 10K lbs is including route support equipment, the max is around 8.6k and I never saw that. I think for the same reason, you'll might never see 15k or whatever the actually number is for the V-22 is that you cube out before getting there. The V-22 is newer but it's slower as I understand it and not sure about its legs.

Meanwhile, I actually want to go back to flying the COD.

No you don't power ranger...you want to go back to the COD lifestyle. Without that, you are an E-2 guy, flying fucking circles in the sky, landing at night on a boat, living on the boat, hating life. Been there done that :) No offense to the big man of course, the one and only sexy MasterBates!!

You are correct... and I'll still go back to flying that polished, 8-bladed turd if given the chance.
