Thanks goes to Morgan & Sooner - my google skills were failing me with only medals returned and not ribbons.

Here are the ribbons for the Nazis.

If I'm reading it right L-R, War Merit Cross with Swords, 40 years state service (yikes), War Merit Medal 3rd Class.

Working for the state for 40 years..maybe he operated on someone quite interesting.

Did some more research into that ribbon and found out that the War Merit (w/swords) was for being a combat wounded WWI vet. He did operate on some serious dudes, but unfortunately I'll never hear most of the stories.

What do the stars on the ribbons mean?
