If the wing has two sweep angles (more sweepback from the root to about half span, then less sweep for the rest) and no dihedral, then it's probably a MiG 17. The MiG 15 had a thicker wing too, but that difference can be subtle.

Well, at least we know it's not a MiG-28....MiG 15UTI, NX-157GL Owned by Red Star Aero Services
I agree that the picture is a -15 UTI.
I'm sure with a little antibiotics, it can become a regular -15 again.
I beat you to it. And you don't need to get the flight surgeon involved if you use cranberry juice instead.
It would be well nigh impossible, even for the most "eagle eyed" pilot to make that distinction in the heat of air combat. Very possible between the MIGs -15/17/19 and -21 & beyond. If I remember my ac recognition Mig 15 is a good 3-4 foot shorter than the Mig 17.

That thought did pop into my head, If anything the 17 and 19 gives you more airplane to fit into the HUD?It would be well nigh impossible, even for the most "eagle eyed" pilot to make that distinction in the heat of air combat. Very possible between the MIGs -15/17/19 and -21 & beyond.

Uhhh... gee Daddy, what's a HUD? I'm afraid in my era (late middle ages), bogie targeting/tracking was accomplished with a MK-53 Mod II grease pencil mark on the "gun glass". Hmmpf, spoiled young "WhupperSnippers"!That thought did pop into my head, If anything the 17 and 19 gives you more airplane to fit into the HUD?
I know not in Vietnam, but the A-4 got some of the very first Marconi HUDs.Uhhh... gee Daddy, what's a HUD? I'm afraid in my era (late middle ages), bogie targeting/tracking was accomplished with a MK-53 Mod II grease pencil mark on the "gun glass". Hmmpf, spoiled young "WhupperSnippers"!

Yeah, when the Scooter was finally retired, it was much more technologically advanced from the ol' trusty B/C/Es. The Singapore A-4SUs were decades ahead of ours. Mainly because by then we had put all our light attack eggs in the A-7 'SLUF' basket.I know not in Vietnam, but the A-4 got some of the very first Marconi HUDs.
