First off, i want to say that this post is information for those of you applying, not fuel for the fire of one of many arguments on this site on this exact same subject.
As usual, I have to take the side of crowbar on this argument going on in here. I wasn't accepted to 187 because it was so competitive for air slots, I made a few minor changes (and one major one with my PFT, but my run time was still over 22 minutes on that) and was accepted to 188. This shows that it is mostly about who the board is, and who you are competing with for the slots. On another note, it is more than just that, it is your whole package that the board looks at, not just the "pop" info we like to post on this site (PFT, GPA, ASTB, ASVAB, SAT, ACT, and many other acronyms...) but they look at the whole package. An example of this is a gntleman who posted his stats when the East Coast board did not accept him. Eveything on his "pop" info he posted was "better" than min. He had a higher GPA, higher PFT, higher ASTB, and applied for the same contract as me, but I was selected due to the rest of my package that apparently was more complete in the eyes of the acceptance board. I was once that guy who said "dude, your going!" when I saw some good "pop" stats, but after more time of diong research, presenting a package for two boards, and talking to many OCS graduates I learned that you really can't say that.
So, if you take anything away from this post, take this: If someone says your a deffinate/shew-win/golden/etc... take that as a note of encouragement and nothing more. After all, if you have a great package, making it better dosnt hurt your chances so keep working on your PT, keep making those positive friends who can vouch for you on a professional level, and stay involved in making our country a better place from the outside of the military; that way you will make a much more positive effect IN the military. See you in the Fleet! (hopefully, I still have to get through that little interview they like to call OCS)
