Thanks, but I assume you meant gold, not cold?

Yeah, college/NROTC is one of the least enjoyable things I've had to do. But it's over. TBS coming in three weeks.....

First off, i want to say that this post is information for those of you applying, not fuel for the fire of one of many arguments on this site on this exact same subject.

As usual, I have to take the side of crowbar on this argument going on in here. I wasn't accepted to 187 because it was so competitive for air slots, I made a few minor changes (and one major one with my PFT, but my run time was still over 22 minutes on that) and was accepted to 188. This shows that it is mostly about who the board is, and who you are competing with for the slots. On another note, it is more than just that, it is your whole package that the board looks at, not just the "pop" info we like to post on this site (PFT, GPA, ASTB, ASVAB, SAT, ACT, and many other acronyms...) but they look at the whole package. An example of this is a gntleman who posted his stats when the East Coast board did not accept him. Eveything on his "pop" info he posted was "better" than min. He had a higher GPA, higher PFT, higher ASTB, and applied for the same contract as me, but I was selected due to the rest of my package that apparently was more complete in the eyes of the acceptance board. I was once that guy who said "dude, your going!" when I saw some good "pop" stats, but after more time of diong research, presenting a package for two boards, and talking to many OCS graduates I learned that you really can't say that.

So, if you take anything away from this post, take this: If someone says your a deffinate/shew-win/golden/etc... take that as a note of encouragement and nothing more. After all, if you have a great package, making it better dosnt hurt your chances so keep working on your PT, keep making those positive friends who can vouch for you on a professional level, and stay involved in making our country a better place from the outside of the military; that way you will make a much more positive effect IN the military. See you in the Fleet! (hopefully, I still have to get through that little interview they like to call OCS)

Good points there, Makoslim. No matter what happens on that board, I am already a Marine and does all that matters. It's all about persistance. If I don't get into 189, that won't stop me. I will keep pushing. Thanks for your information.

Glen (and all),

Persistence is the key if you don’t get in.

I applied to winter ’04 and wasn’t accepted. The board was turning away 300 PFTers. The year before, I couldn’t even put in a package because there was no mission…

Applied 187 with only a slight increase in PFT, but now an exception to policy for age and WAS selected. My plans were cut short as I was NPQ’d. :( When I left Sergeant Major Willey came over and told us that he respects persistence (he said he likes to see candidates say “F@#% it! I’m not going to take no for an answer :D ).

Others have indicated that the best indicator of whether you’ll get selected is receiving your orders to Quanitico. :)

Someone on the outside has no way of assessing the needs of the Corps. As a result, keep applying! You may not have changed, but their needs might.!

Class 189!

I am active duty Marine and also looking forward to applying for class 189. I applied for MCP (class 187) and didn’t get accepted. I was surprised to see the lack of consistency in selections for the last boards.

PFT: 280
Major: Aeronautics
School: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
GPA: 3.9
MOS: 7041 (Aviation Operations Specialist), Add MOS 0121 (Pers Clerk) & 3531 (Motor T)
LOR: 1 Col, 4 LtCol, 2 Maj, 1 CWO (Gunner), 1 SgtMaj, 1 Capt (OSO), 1 WO
Bilingual (Spanish)
2003 All Marine Rugby

Just like the majority of you, I too want an air contract, but I am willing to accept any MOS in the aviation community (7208, 7220, 7210, and 0207.)

I used some of my administrative knowledge to research information regarding the Marines that were selected on this year’s boards (MCP/ECP/MECEP). I was a 0121 (personnel clerk) for three years, so I could find out just about anything with little information. As previous posts explained, there really isn’t any trend in the selection process. They ranged from walk on water types to 2nd class PFT’ers! It’s very unpredictable. I too was told that I was a shoe-in by many “A” type Marines. I later found that the majority of the Marines that I competed against on the Aug board were mostly SNCO’s with better PFTs, more awards, and “B” billets completed. Even though, as a “whole” I was pretty competitive, it just wasn’t enough. That’s all I can think of, I really don’t know why I wasn’t selected. I have solid PFT, demanding major (aeronautics), good GPA, bilingual and blah blah. I’m busting my ass for this summers board’s (05)...I'm not taking no for an answer!!!

Hey Bill,

Have you submitted your package yet? Mine is still sitting here waiting on my company to get back from leave. I got a feeling it won't happened. Anyway, persistance is the key. Don't give up, and don't take no for an answer. Looking at your stats, you look good for 189 class. Keep your hopes up man. GOOD-LUCK. Im currently on my second tour on MSG.
