O-4 Promotion Board ?

Hey SSHWF,
Not sure how the Navy does it, but why would you even consider passing up a promotion board due to timing? Seriously, is it that important to hit all the wickets that this even sounds like a reasonable idea? On the green side, all the rules vary based on what your MOS is, and what you've done. Timing is important, but not as important as how you do your job (situationally dependent, of course). Just curious.
Besides, if timing is so important that you need to do a shore tour for more than a year before selecting for O-4 that you would consider denying promotion, then shoot yourself now for thinking that is any better. If it's gotten that bad, damn the process and roll with it. At least the pay will be better.

Unless you resign your commission, then go FTS, you have NO CONTROL over your timing.

I hate to be the bearer of statistically based bad news, but flying a T-45, regardless of quality of fitreps, will probably negate the need to worry about command screening. Regardless of what the official pers bs line is, you will not look as good as the FRS boot lickers. You may DH screen, and get to fly grey jets again, but standby for much ass pain following.

From other thread: Tagged for IA on fleet tour, double tapped EP (competitive?), sent to orange and white??? Im confused (which might not be unusual)...Something isn't adding up here. Explain if you can without divulging an animal molestation charge or something... it would help guide the guidance in both this and the IA thread.

Even if you are a O-4 select you still get an O-3 Fitrep until you actually put it on. You just have selected in the promotion box. With the new 3% rate for promotions you might not even put it on till Sept 2012.

That's true, but you're a 1 of 1, or at least so said my research when I was in that boat. I ended up not having a competitive FITREP for a year because of that. Couple that with being a junior guy in the command (it's not your "turn" for the EPs) and it's not pretty (on paper, anyway).

If he is the only O-4 select. Last year on my Dis tour we had 4 selects. Even a 1 of 1 can still get a soft break out.

Some 1 of 1's are more valuable than others...

In addition to the soft breakout, your CO can signal the board that a 1 of 1 is a front runner by giving him a trait average much higher than his "Reporting Senior's Average".
When your record is reviewed in Millington the reviewer will see what the hard breakout was (EP, MP, P plus the number of personnel in each group) and right next to that info is the Individual's Trait Average (your FITREP numbers) and the Reporting Senior's Average (RSA).

If you are a 1 of 1 and at or below the RSA, then that 1 of 1 will not help. If your average is significantly higher then your CO's RSA then your reviewer will be able to see than and he/she should present that info to the tank when your record is being shown.

The CO can say whatever he wants in the write up (soft breakout) and that write will most likely never come back to haunt him. The grade he gives on a 1 of 1 however will change his RSA forever, therefore he's gotta consider the ramifications if he gives really high marks.

If he gives a 5.0 or 4.85 then that number will impact his RSA forever, so, while it still is a 1 of 1, his actions hopefully will be presented to the board/tank.

So a 1 of 1 still may help you, but if your Trait Average is really close to the RSA, then that EP won't carry much, if any weight during a promotion or screen board.
