Jeb Bush's son, and the Presidents nephew, George P Bush is joining the Naval Reserve as an Intel Officer. Looks like you will have some company soon FlyinSpy!!

"George P. Bush, the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and nephew of President Bush, has been selected as one of 15 prospective ensigns for the Navy Reserves intelligence unit."

"Two-week officer indoctrination school?" What happened to OCS?

He is joining the reserves directly, they do things a little differently. FlyinSpy did the same thing, he will be able to tell you in better detail what he did when he was commissioned USNR.

I drove over to Andrews AFB, raised my right hand, and presto! Instant naval officer. Look up "the easy way to a commission" in the dictionary, and there will be a hyperlink to the DIRCOM program. :icon_tong

The DIRCOM intelligence program is really designed for three groups of people -

1) former prior service Es who want to become an O, but not with the active duty committment
2) Idiot savants (like myself...) who have some professionally relevant experience the Navy can leverage while paying cheap wages
3) Politically connected individuals who can "hook a brother up"; in this case "brother" = "Big Navy"

Needless to say, here in DC there are plenty of Hill staffers who end up as DIRCOM intel officers. Coincidence, you say??

I'm sure George P is a good guy, and is more than qualified, but his "quals" likely tally more heavily in column 3 than in the others.

The 2 week indoctrination course is better known as "Knife and Fork School", and is 2 weeks of my life someone still owes me. :D

Ill put money that this is just part of the greater scheme to build his political resume. And seriously Two Week Officer Indoc training.... can the Navy grow a pair for christ sake and realize that if you demand more from these people in training them to become officers they will make better officers and increase the strenght of your service. Im not saying the guy needs to go to boat school to know how to lead, but two weeks thats like summer camp. Mid Summers are longer then that.

I see an inevitable "A Bush who is going into intelligence" joke on late night TV.

Oh, Scoob, you make me laugh! HAHAHAHAHAHA!! :yuck_125: :irked_125

Hey...your word, not mine. The Bush family is unquestionably a priviledged bunch...no doubt about it, just like thousands of others and it is nice to see those people, who clearly don't have to for opportunity reasons, choosing to serve.

Get over yourself.

Ill put money that this is just part of the greater scheme to build his political resume.

This seems a bit out of line...he's doing it. Period. Good for him.

And what experience with the reserves are you basing that on?

Marine Reserve officers recieve the same 10 week hell and 6 month Suck as every other officer in the Corps. Does the Navy feel there is some critical differnce in the level of training needed between active and reserve duty. Why does it take 14 weeks to train every other officer but a reservist can do it in 2. Its a joke, seriously. Even if you've gone through the Academy we do the Bulldog program which takes longer then this. Ive been to friggen summer camps that are longer then two weeks. You dont see reserve basic being shortened to 3 full days over the weekend do you. Why would we expect any less from the men leading them.

The Navy does it to suit their needs, simple as that. The DIRCOM program is set up for people like reserve intel types, docs, and other specialists that the Navy needs. If we can get people who have the right skills, like fluency in Arabic or a trauma surgeon, by doing this then I am all for it. Not only that, the people in the DIRCOM program are recruited as staff and restricted line officers, not URL officers that are going to command operational units.

The Marines have the luxury of not needing to staff for these specialties. They are a bare bones force that does not have the support staff or the ancillary duties that the other services have with the exception of JAG's. This includes medical support (Marines use the Navy, obviously), research scientists, specialized logistics and engineering experts. The other services staff places like USAMRIID (United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases), the DOD intelligence services (Marines are few and far between at them), and research/testing facilities like the NRL and U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (where do you think they put the M-1 and Hummer through their paces?). Even the large scale logistics that provides the vast majority of the supplies overseas is handled by the USAF, US Army and the Military Sealift Command (you think 60 C-130's provide the USMC in OIF and OEF all of their beans and bullets?). All of the other services have specialized officers and staff for these respective functions (the Army Quartermaster Corps even has officers who specialize in running oil refinery facilities and port facilities, they are sometimes responsible for that stuff in a war zone).

So while the USMC does an admirable job, there are simply functions that the other services perform that require specialists who really don't need to go through OCS/NROTC/Academy and DIRCOM fits the bill. The USMC does not have officers (PhD/MD's) studying the DNA of the latest in bilogical threats, the US Army does. Same thing with the USAF and Navy.

There is a method to the madness, you just have to look at the bigger picture.......;)

Flash if thats the case I think it lends even more credit to the idea that this is nothing more then Political Resume building. And Ill bet whenever this guy does decide to pursue a military career the fact that he was in the Navy, be it in a very limited capacity as you just said, it will come up to his benefit.

If you want to serve in this capacity fine, but after the experiance Ive had with the Air Force medical corps I could put money that most of these people see themselves as whatever their job is first and members of the military second. Wanna piss a military doctor off call him by his rank, thats what my NCO father would do when he had some piss ant Captain that wanted his free ride through medical school and saw his service to Uncle Sam as mearly paying back a debt and failed to live up to the expectations one should have of Officers.

Keep in mind this is the exact reason I picked the Marine Corps above all the other services.

OK, You're speaking out your ass here buddy. I've served in a combat zone with several DIRCOM Intel types including FlyinSpy. They were superior in every respect to the vast majority of active duty standard commissioning source Intel types and WAY better than the two USMC dedicated Intel types I served with. These people bring unique skills to the Navy community and their initiative to do so should be recognized as valuable to the service and their country. Every one of them I've known certainly did not need the money for doing so and are VERY well recognized in their own fields.

Im not saying if your not active your no good. Gotta hem that line of thought in quick before somebody goes off on that tangent.

Im saying in this case I highly doubt his motivation is anything outside of political planning. You dont grow up with a grandfather and uncle being the President and Gov father and not realize that you are essentially fast tracked into a career that holds lots of power and is built on how well you can sell yourself and who you know. I highly doubt that he was suddenly overcome with patriotism to make him say "I need to join the Navy." He has the connections, he could do what he wants from here, but he chose to take a role that provides the maximum credit (I was in the military) for what can be considered a very low overall investment (Short training, every connection imaginable to get it as easy as possible). Its not like there is any chance in hell he will be put in any kind of risky place, hes the presidents nephew that would be a political embarrasment for him to be risked like that so the CIC could say "See my nephew is in harms way."
