Burning questions about OCS, flight school and Navy life

how much $ do you earn as an officer?

I understand some of you may be uncomfortable posting this information, but in an effort to determine the financial feasibility of supporting a wife and children on an officer's pay and compensation, I'd appreciate information from AW's of all ranks that break down the following:

1. your pay grade
2. years in service
3. total sum of all monthly compensation including:
a. salary
b. BAH (denote with or without dependents)
c. aviation career incentive pay
d. family separation allowance
e. basic subsistence allowance
f. hazardous duty pay
g. pay for deployment
h. sea pay

NOTE: I'm not sure if the above allowances are legitimate. Please correct me if I'm wrong I took them from here: http://www.dfas.mil/militarypay/militarypaytables/2008MilitaryPayCharts35.pdf

Usmilitary.about.com Go to this website, all of your questions will be answered, but to answer your question... Yes and No, it depends on the quality of life you would like to have. Sometimes there are more things in life and family than money.

1. LT O-3
2. 8+
3. total sum of all monthly compensation including: *mine comes out in the neighborhood of $7k/mo, I see about $2700 a check after taxes.
a. $5002
b. $1333 Single, Kingsville, TX (varies by Duty Station Zip Code)
c. $650 (over 6 years flying)
d. $0 (get $250/mo if gone over 30 days, if you have dependents, ONLY when deployed/gone)
e. $203
f. $0 currently, used to get $150 a month IIRC for being an LSO only when on the boat
g. Not sure what you are asking about. Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger Pay? $250 only when in a designated area. (read: war zone)
h. $0 currently. $100 when underway. Only accrue "Sea time" when underway, unlike Swo-lings. They accrue time when assigned to boat, but only paid when underway.

The allowances they show ARE legitimate, but you are not entitled to all of them all the time.

You will, at OCS get:
Salary for E5, BAH(if you have dependents) and I don't think you get family sep. You MAY. Not sure. They take BAS because they feed you there.

Upon Commission, you get
O1 Salary, BAH (if you don't live on base), BAS

Upon check in to Primary, they add Flight pay ($125 for you)

I was able to support a wife in college and 2 households (money was tight, and no geo-bachelor at the RAG) on O-1 pay. But we lived cheap. This was with over $100K in student loan debt between us (read as $1000/mo student loan payment).

Thanks for the links. I've look on a few of those sites, but I wanted to hear from some winged aviators personally. A government chart is one thing. Live testimony is another. But I agree that money isn't everything. Just want a ball park figure.

Sonicboom, supporting a wife and kids is VERY feasible on Officer pay. Many Enlisted Sailors and Marines who make far less than you will make it work, they just live within their means.

Just remember, if you have a family, don't be pissed when you drive a Ford Ranger and a Minivan, and your single squadronmates are driving BMWs and Vettes. That's the price of a family.

Now, being an O-3 and divorced, THAT is where you money will be tight. Trust me on that.

Like MB said with a family you can live pretty well with in your means, but your not going to be popping the Cristal and making it rain in the club on the weekends.

This is the clean version of my LES from last month. I am a prior enlisted LTJG (I was still an Ensign last month) with 4 years 7 months service. I have a wife, 2 kids, and live on base. Hope this helps (if any of you guys see any identifying info on here that I missed, please let me know ASAP so I can remove it)

HAL and A4's, I'd like to thank you guys personally for taking the largest cut out of my paycheck with yer damned Social Security!:D

PS, I am not an O-1E...I didn't serve long enough to get the "E"...

So what do you drive, the Chrysler Town and Country or Dodge Caravan?

For the uninitiated, I'm divorced. Never had any kids (that I am aware of).

I drive a truck, she drove either a VW TurboBeetle or VW Jetta.

You "mid month check" is considered a deduction. He's getting $1360 twice a month, and paying his BAH right back to Uncle Sam, because he lives in Govt Housing.

Plus I see about $200 a month in bills paid automatically out of the check plus $192 into TSP (think 401K)
