That cockpit looks like an ergonomic nightmare.

The Rooskies never have figured out ergonomics. We got to have a show-and-tell in some Djiboutian Hinds and Hips (the DJ AF ramp was next to ours) and the cockpits looked and felt like something from a Saw movie.

The latest Flanker versions, especially the export ones, have gone a long way to fixing that. The Su-30MKI/MKM cockpits are considerably better than the older ones.

Why did that company go through all of the trouble to import, and modify the plane, only to then sell it for $5M? I can't imagine they will be making a profit on that (the transport flight in the AN, the plane, parts, labor, etc... should be more than $5M IMO)

I had read somewhere that the Russians' Attitude Gyros work backwards from ours. As in not the way the mind expects them to work.

Update: Here's a decent article on the differences.


My Yak has original Russian instruments and the attitude indicator does work backwards from U.S. versions. Took a little getting used to, but it works okay. I will say the instuments are BIG and heavy. The radio gear weights about 80 pounds (for one radio).

...and in case of NORDO you can always use this device!

(still installed and operational in today's Aeroflot Tu-154 fleet)

Well for about $5 million, you can purchase your very own civilian version of a Su-27. Pride Aviation has a pair available for sale right outside of Rockford, Illinois. Just recently passed FAA Phase 1 and should soon be cleared for the skies over the U.S:
