It mentioned a Navy pilot with a Marine B/N...did this really happen in fleet squadrons?

In the early 1970s there were a few Pacific Fleet F-4 squadrons with Marine RIOs. The Navy had a shortage and the Marines had a surplus. There was an overlap in replacements in my squadron, and for a while we had two Marine RIOs.

One question and one editorial comment . . .

The article mentioned Intruders with AIM-9s. Was this common? I'd never heard of it before.

Second, the heck with you old timers and your Mk 82s. Imagine, if you will, what we could be doing in Iraq and Afghanistan with a carrier-capable aircraft carrying 26 JDAMS . . .

Is there really a need for 26 JDAM capability (bigger numbers and "looking awesome" isn't the same as "need")?

or don't have the time to pick up the book that made Stephen Coonts somebody in publishing world

I think the book is a lot better. The movie was great, but deviated some from the actual plot and a lot from the characters. I couldn't put it down.

Out of shear coincidence I ran into Stephen Coonts' flight lead from Vietnam in Culpeper, VA. Great guy with some great stories.

Whaaat?

You and me both. I always wanted to fly the Skyraider, Tomcat, and Intruder in that order.

Iff'n you weren't saddled with bein' a "SOONER", you'd have selected a Skyhawk as Numero Uno!:icon_tong
