Then there was the time when I got tossed like a sack of shit when I got distracted looking at a female student ..... Lessons learned as we slide down the razor blade of life. hmmmm

Last Oct08 we were at a BBQ with a bunch of genuine tough guys and as it progressed, we ended up shooting our pistols on the private range. My son (2 yrs old) got excited about the "pow pows" and to this day can tell the difference in rifle and pistol and cannon as he saw that day.
His mother (she is deadly with a 1911) and I are quick to correct him when he does the "Pow Pow" thing and how he does it. All we can hope for is for him to do the right thing as he grows older.
I have the unfortunate experience of my oldest son shooting some kids at school many years back. I'm still not sure if drugs were involved but he still has serious issues and a revolving door problem with incarceration.
It does not deter me from firearms nor good training for kids as soon as they can discern safe and unsafe. Is that any different than trying to keep them from pulling a hot pan over on their heads? well kinda sorta ....
Parenting is such a huge responsibility and I wish I had been more aware of it when I was still a youngster of 20-25. How many times have I wished I could go back and change things but it ain't gonna happen so my best shot is to pass along my horrible fuckups with my kids in hope someone else will not duplicate them.
I try to clean up my language here but somehow, it just seems right to the point when I am profane.

Nose broken three times, broken ribs, thumb broken twice, toes so many times I can' remember any more. Rock is SO right, through pain comes knowledge! I feel those twinges he mentioned when the weather changes...

I wrestle D1 folkstyle and freestyle. Thats where I started learning some stuff but after a few real fights I learned some ju jitsu, judo and some other mma stuff and it has made a huge difference in my wrestling and fighting abilities, the wrestling really helps on the ground and getting away from an opponent.

Wrestling does help for sure, but you gotta know when to use it---and when to not use it. I remember seeing a fight back in high school when this wrestler (a good wrestler actually) thought he owned the locker room. He started talking shit to a basketball player who took some kind of martial art. Basketball player shoves him hard, wrestler shoots for his leg and takes a kick to the face as he's coming in.

Game over.

That's why it's important to know a few different forms of combat---because when all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.

That's awesome. I'm the opposite of the guy I described. I can hold my own on my feet, but I'm pretty screwed on the ground.

I have a friend who says he's thankful he stuck with judo instead of more jiu-jitsu because most fights end up on the ground... I dunno.

I study ching-ching bang.

I also use the Scottish martial art, Fook Yuu! It's mostly head butting and kicking people when they are on the ground.

Wow. It's a good thing they didn't live on campus where the good guys would have become bad guys for defending themselves.
