Marine officer minimum height?

Yes, I have searched for hours on this website and others. I have been given contradictory info several times. Can a current Marine Officer please weigh in with a site (MCO or similar document) for the minimum height requirement to commissioned in the USMC? The NROTC website says 66". MCO20P6100.12. (page 114) shows a minimum height of 58" for males. I called the Marine 800# and they told me 58" one time and 66" the next time I called. My son is a HS junior, 62" tall (and likely will not grow much taller according to the DR). He is very athletic (varsity wrestler/ice hockey player). He wants to be a Marine. Before I tell him he is not qualified, I at least want to be able to show him where it says that in writing.

Thanks for your time and service to our country.

How about you have him find out since it's his career. I wish him the best in his search.

Seconded. If your son wants to be a military officer, he should start taking some initiative on his own and run down the data himself. If he's going flat out on other parts of an application, and you're just giving him a hand with this minor detail, that's one thing. If you're doing all the legwork finding these things out for him, you are doing him a great disservice given what will be expected of him in future.

If your son wants to be a military officer, HE should be spending hours on the computer running these things down, not YOU.

While I agree with the officers above me that he should research this stuff himself, and respect their experience on this stuff, it seems possible that this guy's kid doesn't even know that his height would be an issue based on my reading of the original post.

BTW, it's entirely possible that he will get taller. I know I got taller my junior year of high school.

Good luck...

He's a father trying to look out for his son and can't even get a straight answer from the Marine 1-800 number, I know you all are trying to be 'helpful' but you could be a little nicer about it to a guest. If someone knows the answer, why not just answer his question?

Here is a place to start. I could not track definite Order at the moment however, the url I attached is for the Marine Corps HT and WT standards which has a max height of 80". I really do not see how your son would not be compliance. I think I met a guy at Lejeune who was 6'3". He might not be able to fly but he can be a Marine.

I'm not in the Corps, but my experience in the military tells me the instruction (as long as it's current) always governs.

You can either call back to the 1-800 number and ask them what reference they are citing when they answer your question...or have you and your son head on down to the local recruiter's office (with a copy of the instruction) and ask them in person. If they say "66 inches" pull out the instruction and request an explanation.

Good luck.

I am 77" tall, currently at TBS with an air contract. Your son will be fine with the height issue. Good luck to him!

Since you already quoted the MCO in your last thread..I'll just say that there have been a few guys I've served with that have been shorter than your son...he will be fine.

My first reaction to some of these replies is "why did some of you bother"?

I'm trying to help my son. If I have to take some crap on this board or anywhere else, I will. I guess I could let my son do all the legwork himself, and he has done quite a bit, but I'm a retired USCG LCDR and I can't get a straight answer. I know what it takes to be an officer: been there, done that, got the retirement checks. I've served with Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Soldiers in my career and I'm asking for some help from some of you former shipmates.

Again: I am looking for something in writing. A MCO # or something. Where does it state the minimum height requirements to be commissioned as a Marine Officer? As Crowbar so eloquently pointed out, I've been looking for a definitive answer since September. Thought I had the answer then only to be told I'm wrong by USMC recruiters.

If you want to argue about a father helping his son, bring it on.
