FY09 STA-21 Soup to selection and beyond MEGA thread

With regards to ROTC, I remember reading that our PCS orders will include being ordered to the NROTC unit in the school of our choice. I think that was in the actual instruction, but I definitely remember reading it.

I'm in the same boat, as far as cramming in credit hours to get an engineering degree in time. I have about a year's worth of credit hours, but it seems that the engineering courses might not be flexible enough to allow me to take during the summer or during one semester or the other. Furthermore, so many are pre-requisites to other courses that I'm not sure how this will work out. This is an interesting problem, to say the least.

First stop, however, will be Barnes and Noble for CLEP study guides to the Chemistry CLEP test!

Do you find out if you are going to BOOST when you log in to the STA 21 website (after it is updated), or after you receive orders? Also, how soon before you PCS do you receive the orders? We are stationed overseas, and would like to PCS early and take leave before BOOST/NSI starts.

Anyone applying to University of Arizona?

i don't think i'm going to boost, but i think it best to plan and be prepared for every eventuality. from what i gather though, my odds of going to boost might be slightly greater because a) i've been out of high school for 6 years and b) i had no college credits on my application.

That doesn't mean anything. I had been in the Navy for nine years and had no college credit.

It all depends on how quickly you get all of your paperwork in on when you get your orders. They started comming out after Christmas stand down last year, and some people got them as late as the day before NSI started.

If you dont even know where or when your going..how do you know what YOUR ROTC is?? I am confused maybe...also anyone on here that are Nukes and went to college that they eccepted a lot of your credits from Nuke School besides ODU?? Last but not least...what school is AMES

The way they select how you go to a school is simple. Each school only has a set number of ROCT spots. When those get filled up then no one else goes to that school. It is a first come first serve basis. I did not hear of anyone not getting their first choice of school last year. And some schools have an unlimited number of ROTC spots (i.e. The Citadel and a few others that I dont know).

You'll probably find out around mid-November whether or not you'll go to BOOST and which NSI class you'll be in. Like Stick said, orders will start to be processed mid-January. Be that guy/girl who gets everything early so your just waiting for your orders. But be prepared to standby and wait.... Just FYI most of the people running STA-21 have rolled so while it'll be the same curriculum, your experience will vary somewhat. As for BOOST, it used to be laid back but since MSgt retired, who knows who took it over and what they'll expect of you guys.

Thanks for the info Stick and Haubby, that helps a lot. Do you have any recommendations of NROTCs that are particularly great (esp. for pilots) or any to steer clear of??

Each ROTC unit will vary somewhat but first thing you should do is find the school you want to attend and get accepted. Call the unit and they'll put you in touch with OC's who will answer your questions about their programs and what not.

Just logged into the STA 21 website, and I have been selected for BOOST. Report date is the end of Feb 2009.

I have not heard anything bad about a particular unit. I don't think one is better than anopther for pilots. I like The Citadel because we have three pilots and an NFO here. We are also only about an hour away from MCAS Beufort, and are trying to plan a FTX to there so we can check out the hornets there.

Thanks for the info. I am seriously considering Citadel now that I have been doing my research. Do you live in barracks? Or out in town? How is Charleston?

Out in town. No OC's live in the barracks. We don't play in the cadet games, just ROTC events like PT and lab. I love Charleston so much I spent over 4.5 years on my boat just to come back for shore duty. I was getting out of the Navy to live here, but then got accepted into STA-21. I still didn't want to move so I am now at The Citadel. It is not like anyone would think. It is the same as a regular college, you just wear youre khakis every day.
