The VW love-hate fest (threadjack)

Had an 87 Scirroco 16V as an Ensign/jg/LT. Drove it for seven years and 140K with zero problems. Buzzy little engine though, not much of a long distance cruiser.

Been on an Audi kick the last few years. Had an 87 A4 with the 1.8T and it was great, sold it with 150K and have a 2004 Allroad right now that's been pretty good other than a very strange frayed wire in the drivers seat that took them a bit to track down.

Those are two words I never thought I'd see in the same sentence.
I have 97k miles on an '03 VW. I beat the crap out of it every day, and the only problem it's had in 5 years is the fuel door solenoid stuck once.

I sold VWs for a few months while sitting in DEP, waiting to go to Boot. I remember one car that seemed to be in the shop frequently, but most people who complained about reliability were the ones that were too retarded to close their gas caps... which triggers a CEL.

I think for the most part, with modern cars of any make, unless you get that 1 of 1,000 lemon, you just have to change the oil and it will be reasonably reliable.

That's more true than most people realize. With modern technology and considering what's at stake, auto manufacturers are producing some of the best cars ever in terms of reliability. It's interesting to note that Toyota has been having some issues lately: http://money.cnn.com/2007/10/16/autos/cr_reliability/index.htm
The recent skid is believed to be due to their extremely fast expansion and neglecting quality. Me, I'm an American car guy (Ford namely) and despite what people think, their quality is a lot better than the late 90s early 00s problems (Ford recently tied Honda and Toyota on initial quality). As for VW, they're notorious for customer complaints during repairs.

I think part of VWs bad rap for client complaints is the clientele.

Lot of snobbish, I-want-my-way-now types driving them compared to most other "normal" brands in the price range.

I currently drive a '72 Beetle. Hands down the most reliable & most fun car I've ever owned. Plus, I can work on it myself & I don't need a degree in rocket science to do it. :D

My '03 1.8T Jetta pretty much ran fine until I decided to have cosmetic repair done to fix a dented front bumper.

While taking that off, the shop improperly reinstalled the radiator, which caused it to cut the coolant hose and damaged the fan assembly.

Also developed a gas leak requiring a gas tank replacement.

While fixing that, the shop also screwed up the brake master cylinder, which has me playing the engine brake game to see how few times I can hit the brakes on any given trip until they can get a spare.

Basically...all thanks to incompetent dealership mechanics.

Triumph TR-4 in college.

Lucas electrics .... a.k.a. .... The Prince of Darkness.

:)

One of the other studs living in my apartment complex in PCola had a TR-7. What is burned into my memory is it never moving from its parking spot and him always bumming rides....as well as it always having trunk and hood open all weekend and every other panel removed while he labored for hours trying to chase some electrical glitch.

My wife and I both grew up driving bugs and never had issues. Only car that I did ALL the work. I even pulled engine on my 71 Super Beetle and drooped in a mild racing cam and added a Weber 2bbl carb and Porsche 914 parts wherever I could and an expanded oil capacity/filter mod...etc., etc. Lots of fun if you didn't care about having A/C.

Back to thread topic. I've moved on to Porsches and my wife doesn't care what she drives, but when they brought back the beetle design, she went nuts so I got her one. It's only been in for a convertible top adjustment and recall on a light, but both times I got outstanding service. Car runs like a champ and wife is happy as a clam. My guess is bad experiences on any car aren't necessarily nationwide, they are more dealer dependant.

Electrical demons are the worst. Even with a multimeter it's still impossible to find the problem.
