It's been a major FedEx transhipment hub in Asia since @ 1994 or 1995 .... I still called the tower just to say "hello" while going by on every trip down to Manila ....

My info is the guys still stay up on the hill @ the 'ol CUBI BOQ ... so I guess it's still possible that if you listen real hard ... you can still hear the sounds of little flip-flops going down the halls at night ... :D

BUT: There's also talk of FedEx moving the base (or at least having a second base) in Guangzhou, Communist China. 'Scuse me ... mainland China. FedEx's CUBI lease is up for renewal in 2007.

BUT: FedEx has recently held talks with President Gloria Macapagal Ar-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-royo .... (trill your "R's") :) ..... and they are considering a move from CUBI to the old Clark AFB ... which just happens to be located in Pampanga province .... which just happens to be the home province of President Gloria Macapagal Ar-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-royo.

The former Clark AFB -- currently housing UPS air operations in Asia --- is going to be renamed for the President's father .... a former President of the Philippines.

It must all just be a coincidence .... ;)

That was a wild place when I was there in the mid 1970s. (1976) HMM 165s home port was Subic. We were at the old seaplane ramp at Cubi Point. Had some good time in the Po. Lots a magoos and a few honey cos.

Thanks. I read the Clark had suffered severe damage from the volcano.

Just outside of Po a few miles was Salakots, which had the best lobster and coldest San Miguel around, and very nearby was the Samurai, which had the hottest LBFM's around. Consequently, every inport, when a group gathered around Ready Room Five on Midway, or the Ready Room bar at the Cubi O'Club, the question of the evening was what to do for dinner: Mongolian Barbeque at the Chuckwagon (by the Subic pier), or salakots and Samurai for 'Lob and Knob.'

:icon_smil :icon_smil I remember a place called Jollos (sp) If I remember right it was at the end of Magsaysay. Also down near the end was a place called the Astro. AHH the memories... I would love to go back just to see how things have changed.

Old news .... Mt Pinatubo smoked Clark and basically shut it down, but Clark has largely been renovated and renewed. Pinatubo was also one of the reasons for the CUBI closure ... but not as directly as the volcano affected Clark. I am a master of the obvious ....

JOLO's .... but then there was "New JOLO's" and "Old JOLO's" ... and your memory is correct as to the location ... :D

The "San Miguel acrobatic show" therein always got my attention ... :)

Run down this list at your convenience for a trip down memory lane ...

Pour something cold on them ... that will help. That's what I'm off to do right now after reading some of those old bar names ... :)

One more ... the East Inn Club .... this is where we had a 12-man wetting down party ... we bought the "club" for an entire night .... food, music, beer, whatever ... oh, yeah, some girls were invited, too  ... it was one of the "historic" nights for AirWing 11 in the 'Po ... :)

I know it doesn't look like much from the outside .... but on the inside ... ohhhh, Mama.

If I remember right it was kinda far from Magsaysay and didn't they play some sort of Russian roulette there? I think some of the old salts took a bunch of us newbie's there our first week. Talk about culture shock.

Ahhh yes, Po. Good times across the "Aromatic River"..chucking pesos to the kids in the river...eating baloots (sp)...smiles (not the AW type :) )

How many people do we know that got busted trying to go from the ship directly to the O'Club with out passing go, or vice versa. Running across the runways...I think I can make it. :icon_smil

The pool at the O'club...eating a Cordon Bleu Burger while drinking a Cubi Special, a CubiNuclear Special (more booze) or a Cubi Thermonuclear Special (wow)...then getting your massage behind the O'Club...all legit...

I was on the Lincoln when Pinatubo Blew it's top. We performed a humanitarian mission called Operation Fiery Vigil. We made three runs from Cubi to Cebu with the ship full of every dependant and or military type from the area. We carried about 5000 dependants on each day and a half run. Lots of pets, too. They stayed in Hangar Bay 3...aka "The Pound." Many families (dependant wives and kids) were telling tales of not having electricity or hot water for days. Lots of looting...sort of like Katrina /New Orleans...but done PI style with machetes.

It looked like the place had recieved three feet of snow, except it was grey and still falling. It got in everyones eyes and hair. You had to be careful not to scatch a cornea getting the stuff out of your eyes.

That was the beginning of the end...actually pretty close to the end as I saw it.

What a mess.

Go out "Main Gate" ... straight ahead all the way to the "T" ... JOLO's slightly left ... East Inn Club @ a block to the right. Sometimes known as "East END Club" ... probably slurring our words ...???

See Rome and die???

Hell, no ... see Olongapo and Die ... and with a smile on your face, to boot. :)
