I think if you go to http://www.nsgreatlakes.navy.mil/otcp/ you can find a list of things that they suggest to bring but you can always bring stuff and leave in your car if you chose to drive.
This is absolutely right. We actually recently updated that list and added some items that candidates consistently thought were contraband (i.e. authorized optional items). This question is actually listed in the FAQ for OCS and the answer can be found at http://www.nsgreatlakes.navy.mil/otcp/ocs/bring.htm

Really? For E-6 and below? I understand rate badges, ribbons, etc, but to bring uniforms (and which uniforms?) Maybe things have changed, but guys wore poopie suits and chrome domes the first week (and some other weeks if they were bad) and washed khakis the rest.

Note the "if applicable". We do have chiefs report to OCS, so this definitely applies to them.
