Kimber Vs. Springfield. or other?

I've been shooting the new Springfield G.I. with 4" alot recently and I'm thinking very seriously about getting another 1911. Something in the 1k range. It will be used heavily (1k rounds a month) and will be kept in the night stand for anyone stupid enough to come into my house uninvited.

The MC operator is a nice looking piece, but I'm pretty sure that it's made in Brazil and I'd really rather buy American made products.
I really like the looks of the Kimber raptor II, however, the warrior has a light rail. Uber liberal california does not allow the desert warrior, so that is out of the running.

I like the idea of the .22 conversion that kimber sells as 45 acp gets expensive and I dont have reloading gear yet.

What do you guys think? How handy is the light rail? Sure, it looks cool, but how tactical is it to try and sneak up on a bad guy in my house with a bright ass light in their face? What weapon would you choose if you were in my place?

The light rail....pretty darn handy.

I really like Kimbers over Springfield, Colt, Kahr, etc. You may not like them. It might be wise to seek out a shooting range which will let you try out various handguns and see which one fits you best.

WRT your second question, your chances for encountering a bad guy in your house are pretty slim and I think the light rail would be the least of your worries IF you have failed to first practice and practice again. If I were in your position, I would first attend one of the many fine tactical handgun courses available. Lethal Force Institute is one of the best; they have a course in Seattle. http://www.firearmsacademy.com/udfi.htm Even closer is Front Sight firearms training institute http://www.frontsight.com/

I have a springfield armory XD45. I've only shot 150 rounds through it but so far I love it. Its nice to have 14 45ACP rounds ready to go.

I like its ergonomics. Normally I don't like polymer frames, but this one works really well for me.

1911s are great as classics, but I prefer a modern weapon. (Ok, let the flames begin...)

I'll throw in for the Springfield MC Operator. I have one, and keep a Surefire light attached. As far as trying to sneak up on someone... if you live with roommates, it might just be worth it to get a positive ID, and not having to look for a light switch can pay. I can't attest to where the frame might be made, but it is stamped Geneseo, IL... which leads me to believe here.

I've put about 7k rds through the MC Operator in the last year, no faults at all. And I got it for a tad less than a grand. As far as wanting to shoot 22 from it... yeah you can... but why? For the price of a good 22 conversion, you can almost cover a nice new P-22. For my money, I'd rather have a second weapon.

Food for thought. Thank you. Feddoc- I realize that the likelyhood of something like that happening is very slim. There have been a few home invasions within miles of my house and my father's truck was stolen while I was out of town about a year and a half ago. I would like to be prepared for the "what if". If I thought it was inevitable, I would have the 12 ga. winchester 1200 loaded with buck shot and under the bed.

Kimber Custom... Had one for about 6 years and love it. Never had a single problem with it and I've put a couple thousand rounds through it. One of my all time favorites. I agree with the conversion kits. Don't do it, just get another pistol in .22

^ Ditto ... unless they are Colt and collectible ... and then you don't shoot 'em anyway. "Shooter" .22 LR makes and models are cheap and plentiful.

my two cents

Just got the XD-40 subcompact. Shoots great pretty accurate too for a 3" barrel. Some people dont like the trigger on the XD's though there is some pretty significant take up after the trigger resets. Personally i dont mind it but it can make rapid fire a little challenging if you arent used to it. Lots of fun to target shoot and a great concealed carry weapon, small easy to hide and a pretty good magazine capacity for a .40.

That's a lot of ammo in one year. Did you buy it in bulk?

1k at a time. I shoot Wolf mostly... people can say all the bad things they want about Wolf, but I have never had a problem with them. I did get about 2k cheap cheap from a family owned gun shop that was going out of business back in MD.

It (9mm model) kept me from getting mugged/robbed 1 1/2 years ago in Auburn, WA .... :)

As a result ... it's now my daily CWP companion, even though I have several similar (small/compact) handguns that I "like better".

Just wondering which holster you use to conceal it. Im trying to find one the one that came with it isnt really that great.

In this case ... a belly bag (where it resides most of the time) ... it was laying on the front seat of the promiscuously affluent Escalade ... when the 3 miscreants approached me after "casing" me for a quick score as I was washing the car at a public car washing facility ... :)

There are some "plastic" holsters that fit the pistol well ... paddles, belt slides ... I just haven't tried 'em ...
