qualifing weapon at Naval OCS

1) I should be going to OCS in Florida in a month or so. I received a flight slot. What is the sidearm you qualify with?

2) What is the current side arm that a officer would use if he was on duty or if he were doing some sort of watch?

3) What is the sidearm that is carried by aircrew?

Either the SIG Sauer P228 (M11) or the Beretta 92F/FS (M9)

HA HA HA HA HA!

Refer to answer 1, although I think you can bring any weapon that you can fit in your seat pan (tacair) as long as you provide own ammo. But dont quote me on that.

Actually, there are certain watches and duties that an officer would have a sidearm for. Duty isn't just ODO/SDO.

As far as I know, that's a no-no unless you get permission.

Good advise. You don't know what you are talking about. You're a Midshipman. Leave answering fleet questions to those that have actually been in the fleet....

Plus, with a Gunner as a father, he should know better. :D

Raptor -- I have never heard of a squadron that let's aircrew use their own weapons -- even in helos where you aren't restricted to the space of a seat pan.

Please refer to Brett and HAL's advice.

Awsome guys keep em coming!

I was tossing around the idea of purchasing a new handgun. Right now I have a Springfield XD that performs flawlessly except I don’t care for the trigger pull, its much rougher than any Sig I have ever shot….

Are there TACAIR squadrons out there that allow the pilot to crack open the seatpan in order to stow personal items before each flight? (Not to mention a loaded sidearm?)

I don't know about Navy regs. but that is a big no no in the Army.

During Desert Storm an armor officer thought it would be cool to use his grandfather's WWII issue M1911 as his sidearm. Some one found out about it & reported him. From what I remember, he was relieved of duty & brought up on charges. I don't remember what the outcome was though.

Yeah...I didn't say anything because I wasn't tacair and because I've been retired for a while, but....

In P-3s, we carried our pistol in our vest.

When I was in Weps on TR during Desert Storm, the squadrons stored their pistols in our armory. The were given to the pilots to carry in their vests. They were all Navy issue pistols, no personal ones. But ship's company were allowed to store personal weapons in the ship's armory. We had shotguns, rifles and pistols. They usually belonged to the guys that lived aboard and had no other place to store them. It was a real hassle for them to check them in and out to go shooting. Most just sat there.

I'd say a big no... screwing with the ejection seat would not be a good idea... that's why you're allowed 5 lbs in your survival vest.

You have wings and a picture of a Hornet, what do you fly?

No way! Where you on the TR when they went through the Red Sea to get to the Gulf and had to go through the Straits of Bab el Mandeb?

If so, I was assigned engineroom 2 on the USS Mississippi escorting you! I remember we had to escort the Roosevelt across the Red Sea and through the Straits because we were a nuke as well and didn't need to stop and refuel. We couldn't go more than 25 knots, though, because the mess cranks dumped the garbage overboard and it got sucked into the main condenser of one of the engines. We felt like total tools, but couldn't stop to fix it because the TR had someplace to be. She just passed us, waited for us to catch-up and go past before the carrier kicked it up gain playing leap-frog :tongue2_1

In a word - no. It's not like a glove compartment or center console in a car. The seatpan comes from AIMD "as-is." This ensures quality control/assurance and that none of the gear in it has been tampered with. You do NOT want to have endless amount of screwing around with something you're going to depend on for your life.

You'll qual on one of the two previously mentioned pistols once in your fleet squadron (aside from any qual at OCS). Your fleet "qual" essentially ensures you don't hurt yourself or others other than your intended target. That's about it. This doesn't mean that your squadron may not set up something for add'l quals for marksmanship, but it's not a given.

Plan on toting your pistol in your vest or holster (depending on your gear's configuration.

With the M11 around there's no good reason to carry your own weapon.

That being said TINS. I was in VAQ-141 on TR during ODS and the issue weapon was the five shot .38. Pretty good for shooting the pilot and taking his water and not much else. AIRLANT sent a message out saying thou shalt not carry personal firearms. CAG came out and said it's your pink ass on the edge carry what you want. At that point they all came out. I carried a Browning High power, my pilot a Glock .40, another ECMO the .38 and another ECMO the .38 but unloaded because "loaded guns are dangerous". A lot of other Glocks in the squadron, which at the time was a pretty new weapon, the XO carried a very nice custom 1911 Combat Commander, one ECMO, a former USNA shooter, carried a high standard in .22 assuming it would be quiet enough for any purpose. There were a smattering of revolvers and such. One ECMO hinge brought his wife's .380. He wondered why she gave him 9mm ammo. I would say maybe half the squadron carried a personal weapon. Rick Morgan wrote a story about it in hook a few years later. That CAG was Fox Fallon, now PACOM so maybe his preferences have changed. :)
