Somebody asked me and I'm curious as well. So, anyone know who holds the record for carrier traps? That probably includes left, right, front and back.

A CNATRA LSO had 1000 and that was as of a year ago. He is still waving boats and getting traps so 1001 and still going.

Yeah ... my former B/N ... he retired as a LCDR, started as an E-1 at the end of WW2, was the Navy's oldest LT when we flew together ..... :)

Art was an NFO-aircrewman-officer-gentleman-shipmate extraordinaire (used to call me "Lil' Buddy" ... even though I'm not "little" --- Art was a BIG guy) and he usually had the program wired.

He had 1888 total traps. I bought him several of those .... :) ... What's that ?? Why .... you're welcome, Art.

I thought I remembered our guest last year as being introduced as having the most carrier traps on record. CAPT John Leenhouts with 1,645 traps?

http://www.tailhook.org/GrandClub.html (you'll have to scroll down)

Sorry .... total traps is 1888 for the biggest "bagger" of them all (on record) and it's not Leenhouts. (you'll have to scroll UP, to use your venacular ... ) I think the original question was "who has the most" .... ??? Irrespective of seat ??? At least since we started keeping records and measuring the size of our ... "logbooks"???

There's one guy on the list who absconded with Art's "callsign" --- I take umbrage at that. And I know that "Gorgeous George" had over 2000 traps ... but he's not on the list. He wasn't a "people pleaser", a "company man", or interested in "measuring" ... "Gorgeous" just liked to fly. I met him once late in his career; early in mine.

People can make any claims they want; but the numbers are the numbers. :)

I can call myself a 747 ... but that doesn't make it so ..... ;)

A whale is a whale, right. So why not? I'm surprised no one beat me to it.

So how does one make it thus far bagging traps? Mostly in-cockpit tours, timing, impending war, or did they do like me and hit the boat twice in the TRACOM?

I could be remembering this incorrectly but....I'm fairly certain that there is a plaque in the Naval Av Museum in P-Cola that lists everyone over 1000 traps...

It takes up most of a wall...there are many many many with over 1000. I'm also pretty sure that it lists total numbers as well...

The days of bagging traps is for the most part over. The planes are too pricey and the heavies don't want the wear and tear on them. We had a group of admirals come speak to us with the "confession" that they were consumers and that our culture needs to change. I thought their point was fair enough, but it was largely received by the JOs as "we wrecked aircraft to increase our bragging rights, but we will not let you do the same". Kind of like a parent admonishing a youth not to repeat their mistakes.

Also, I submit that traps from other than the pilot's seat should count more. At least for those flying in my jet.

The plaque is there... however I'm not sure about the total numbers though

I wouldn't mind counting those I've had in the right seat as mine. I tell ya, since my days as an IP at the FRS and through my OIC tour, many of those sitting in the right were mine, if you know what I mean :icon_wink

Folks at Tailhook said the trap record for NFO was LCDR Arthur Critser with 1,888 traps.

For Pilot it is CDR John R. "Lites" Leenhouts, with 1,645 traps.

I remember reading an article about the guys with the most carrier landings. At the end of the article it said the pilot with the most traps was a Royal Navy guy (CAPT I believe), who had 2600 or 2800-something traps, way above anyone else in the US.
