Which watch?

Watch experts, I need you advice!

Our son is in Advanced in Meridian, and about 4-5 weeks away from finishing, winging in late Oct. HOPING HE DOESNT SEE THIS THREAD I want get him a nice watch that he can wear around, without being too "showy". I'd love to get him a Speedy, but might that be a bit much to wear around the squadron as the new guy? Also the ones I looked at yesterday were $7,300, at the Exchange online they are $6,900. At that price I'm not sure it's a great walking around every day watch. Maybe I'll get myself one of those first.....

So, i'm thinking of an Automatic with GMT, priced around 1/2 or less than the Speedy.
Features I think he'd value: automatic, GMT, black or blue face, steel bracelet (with option to switch to a NATO band), water resistant enough to not worry about jumping (falling?) in a pool, able to wear in the cockpit without worrying too much about it.

Brietling Avenger -online $3,600ish (retail is close to $6K)
Longines Hydroconquest GMT Automatic - online $2300ish (retail about $3K)
Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba GMT - $1500ish
Seiko 5 Sport - $500 - this is one that he's mentioned (but he's assuming he's using his money ), but I'd like to get something a little nicer.

I thought about the Hamilton Jazzmaster Performer Automatic ($2500ish), but it just looks like a Speedy knockoff?

Anybody really like or dislike any of these? Any good ones that I should put on the list?

Or, does anyone need to cull their Speedy collection ?

thanks!
