S-2 Cheatin' Death on the TICO :)

Maybe the C-1 ... don't know, don't care ... just glad it wasn't ME. Initial night CQ on the TICO was bad enough ...

*edit* and to give credit where it's due ... this was posted @ a year ago by ... drum roll ... mules83

BTW ... the infamous video clip was taken circa May-April 1971, after the TICO had been converted to an ASW carrier (CVS @ 1970?) and while she was enroute from the Philiippines to Japan.

According to the pilot, the plane was nearly ruined from the sea water and corrosion. The crew actually started to egress when they realized that they were flying again. The Boss told them to "Secure your dumps", but that was in fact sea water pouring out of the fuselage. All the AW stuff inside had to be replaced. Pretty wild.

Id love to have seen the expression the guys at the corrosion control unit had when they found out what happened to the plane.

"You did What!....."

On my last deployment..1953. We embarked San Diego Mar 3rd. on U.S.S. Princeton CVA-37 with five special silver/gray painted Banshees. VF-154 three F2H-3/4s assigned as fighter escort for VC-61 with two F2H-2Ps (photo aircraft) The photo planes had the latest cameras, but the Princeton had the old photo developing techniques. On daylight missions, we would take as much as 3 to 5 hours before returning to the carrier. The 1st Marine Air Wing at K-3 Field..Pphang, So. Korea had the best photo developing equipment, as they were the Photo Reconn base. We would land there upon returning from the photo (escort) mission, get the film from the cameras, develop, refuel, and head for the carrier.

The night photo reconn's was different. Launch, photo mission, back to the carrier
