"AVIATION

THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO APPLY FOR A CAREER AS AN OFFICER IN NAVAL AVIATION! If you are a U. S. citizen, less than 29 and a half years of age, hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher in any academic major), and can meet Navy physical standards for commissioning, you may already be eligible to apply.

A career as an officer in Naval Aviation offers world class training, travel, and valuable leadership/management experience that is generally not available outside of the U. S. Navy. If you are still in college, you may be qualified for the Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program and earn up to $1,500 per month for up to three years prior to graduation. This is not an NROTC program. You receive full pay and benefits while completing your degree and upon graduation, attend Officer Candidate School to earn your commission and then enter training to earn your "wings" as a Naval Aviator.

If you are ready for a new challenge that will redefine your future, I would encourage you to contact your local Navy Officer Programs Recruiting Office immediately to start the application process by calling 1-888-633-9674 or send your resume to hj@cnrc.navy.mil."

If everything is full up and the reqs' are 2.5 absoulute min and preffered 3.5 why do they post ads like this?

Because you never know when the applicant pool will dry up. Also, they will get some younger guys who can fill up spots in 2-3 years, too.

Is there a 2.5 abs min on the overall GPA? If so, I may as well stop tryin to apply until I get mine above that. Ugh.

* Name: Nate
* Age: 22
* School: Univ. of Colorado - Boulder
* Major: Chemical Engineering
* Minor: Atmospheric and Oceanic Science
* Time Left: 3 semesters
* GPA: 2.37 (yes, ugly as sin)
* ASTB: 58 OAR / 8 AQR / 9 PFAR / 8 NFOFAR
* 20 Flight Hours (includes some aerobatic)

I've got a fire under my ass like you wouldn't believe right now in terms of upping my grades, and the semester is going very well so far... but I don't know. My recruiter said he thinks my package is extremely strong outside of my GPA, so... we'll see.

Sounds to me like you need some art classes or maybe basket weaving! That's the only way to bring that ugly GPA up

I wish I could follow your suggestion; unfortunately, my curriculum is pretty much locked in until I graduate due to prerequisites and required classes for graduation.

Should I assume that University of Colorado (Much like UF)lacks a forgivness policy that would otherwise let you retake a class and replace the grade?

The forgiveness policy on this campus is still in the "Beta Testing" phase... while I could theoretically take advantage of it, I dont really want to put myself through the hell of classes that I've already experienced.

Thing is, my engineering courses themselves havn't gone too bad, and I've improved over the last couple of years steadily. It was just the Calc Sequence and Diff Eqs that blasted me. I even managed to squeeze through both Organic Chem 1 and 2 with a C.

Tis a nasty curriculum, and granted, I could have worked harder before, and now I'm struggling to make up for it.

Still though, I reiterate my original question... is there really a 2.5 abs min on the GPA action? Because if so, it's obviously futile for me to be applying. My recruiter still had me send in my package though this summer. I figured he of anyone would know if there's a fast rule on min GPAs.

What then do you suggest I do, outside of better academically, to "round out" my package?

I was told that I should enter some officially timed running events to show that I do well in competetion, and try and do other "official" things. Even though I'm working out for myself, if there is documentation to go along with it, that tends to go over better with the board.

What kind of activities do you think I could pound in over the new few months, or maybe even year (if it takes that long) to illustrate the potential leader, and emphasize other points that the Navy likes to see?

I appreciate it much!

Dairy... don't sweat the GPA too much. I had a pretty lousy overall GPA, because crap general ed. crap that they require in the first two years killed me, two much partying I guess. But my degree specific (I was Aero Sci. major) GPA was over 3.0. Everyone always has some weak point in their package, the "whole person" concept is a reality when it comes to selection.

You could become a member of the Civil Air Patrol .... its a volunteer org. and the official aux. of the Air Farce (hehe). Don't do it just for improving your package though or you won't really have fun. We get to fly missions (mostly search and rescue) and we get to work with kids as well so its pretty rewarding.
